ASSIGNMENT 2

INTRODUCTION

There are different types of lamps bulb around and they were all designed with a certain use
in mind. Short description of major type of bulb commonly found in the home, office and
factory, how they work, and their uses. Here the three type of common lamp bulb that usually
been use.

1.1 INCANDESCENT BULBS

These are the standard bulbs thats most people are familiar with. It works by using an
electricity to heat a tungsten filament in the bulb until it glows. The filament its either in a
vacuum or in a mixture of argon or nitrogen gas. Most of the energy consume by the bulb
is given as heat, causing its Lumens per Watt performance to be low because of the
filaments high temperature, the tungsten tends to evaporate on the side of the bulb.

1.2 HALOGEN BULBS

Halogen bulbs are a variation of incandescent bulb technology. These bulb works by
passing the electricity through a tungsten filament, which is enclose in a tube containing
halogen gas. These halogen gas causes chemical reaction to take place which remove the
tungsten from the wall of the glass and deposits it back onto the filament. These extend
the life of the bulbs in order for the chemical reaction to take place, the filament needs to
be hotter than what is needed for Incandescent bulbs. The hotter filament produces a
brilliant white light and is more efficient more Lumens per Watt.

1.3 FLUORESCENT BULBS

These bulbs work by passing a current through a tube fill with argon gas and mercury.
These produce ultraviolet radiation that bombards the phosphorous coating causing it to
emit light. Bulbs life is very long 10000 to 20000 hours. Fluorescent bulb is also very
efficient, producing very little heat. A common misconception is that all fluorescent lamps
are neutral or cool in colour appearance and do not have very good colour-rendering
ability.
