Coming Up - Ya viene!
Palo de Mayo (Maypole) is an English
tradition that was brought to the Caribbean
by the English sailors. It is a month long
celebration of Afro-Caribbean dance and
culture performed in the RAAS region of
Nicaragua (as well as Belize, the Bay
Islands of Honduras and Bocas del Toro in
Panama). The sensual movements of the
dancers have been picked up by local dance
groups here in San Juan del Sur and have
become popular with visitors attending
cultural nights in the Port City.
Augusto Nicols Caldern Sandino
(later known as Augusto Csar Sandino),
was born on May 18th, 1895 in
Niquinohomo in the Department of
Masaya. Sandino (an official National
Hero") was a Nicaraguan revolutionary and
leader of a rebellion between 1927 and 1933
against the U.S. military occupation of
Nicaragua. Referred to as a "bandit" by the
United States government, his legendary
exploits made him a hero throughout much
of Latin America. Full biography next
week.
In the Catholic Church, the month
of May is dedicated to The Blessed
Virgin Mary. The entire month falls
within the liturgical season of Easter, which
is represented by the liturgical color white
the color of light, a symbol of joy, purity
and innocence (absolute or restored). For
centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside
the entire month of May to honor Mary,
Mother of God. The custom has roots going
back as far as the Ancient Greeks. In
Ancient Rome, May was dedicated to Flora,
the goddess of blooms, or blossoms.
5th of May Cinco de Mayo
A commercial celebration, non-Nicaraguan
yet a popular fiesta in the same way as St.
Patrick's Day and Halloween. Cinco de
Mayo is observed to commemorate the
Mexican Army's unlikely victory over
French forces at the Battle of Puebla on
May 5th, 1862. See story on page 15.
30th May - Mother's Day is celebrated
in Nicaragua on the 30th of May. That day
was chosen by Anastasio Somoza Garca
because it was the birthday of his wife's
mother; Casimira Sacasa de Debayle. They
call May The Month of the Mother's" and
events will concentrate around the last two
weeks of the month.

de un mes de duracin de la danza y cultura
afrocaribea realizada en la regin RAAS

comercial, no-nicaragense, pero una fiesta
popular de la misma manera que el Da de
San Patricio y Halloween. El Cinco de
Mayo es observado para conmemorar la
improbable victoria del Ejrcito Mexicano
sobre las fuerzas francesas en la Batalla de
Puebla el 5 de mayo de 1862. Ver historia en

30 de mayo - En Nicaragua, el Da de
la Madre se celebra el 30 de mayo. Ese da Sol y Luna Spa tiene una promocin de 5 al

At the recent XIII Meeting of the Sub-Committee of Directors of
Police Academies of Central American, Mexico and the Caribbean,

work on a project to improve and widen the Pista Juan Pablo II in
the City of Managua (from near the US Embassy in the west, across

point that the OAS has violated its own founding charter and the
Venezuelan Constitution. Venezuela believes that the U.S.
government has threatened and coerced smaller countries into
joining the onslaught against Venezuela and that the OAS
committed fraud on April 3rd when a resolution against
Venezuela was approved at an extraordinary meeting without
counting the 18 required votes. The process to withdraw from the
OAS will take 24 months.
President Outlines Plan for 2017-2021

Nicaragua brilla entre altos mandos
En la reciente XIII Reunin del Subcomit de Directores de
Academias de Polica de Centroamrica, Mxico y el Caribe,
Nicaragua obtuvo la mejor evaluacin en la regin en trminos de
nivel de seguridad. Durante la reunin de dos das en Managua, los
directores firmaron el Manual de Organizacin y Funcionamiento
del Instituto Centroamericano de Estudios Superiores Policiales. El
desarrollo de estos cursos tiene como objetivo fortalecer las
instituciones miembros y proporcionar las habilidades y
conocimientos necesarios para combatir la delincuencia
organizada.
Clones
La Polica Nacional de Nicaragua realiz recientemente una
exitosa operacin secreta en un equipo sospechoso de usar tarjetas
de cajero automtico "clonadas" para retirar dinero de varias
cuentas. El equipo de tres fue arrestado el pasado viernes 28 de abril
cuando estaban a punto de usar las tarjetas en una gasolinera cerca
de la Rotonda Cristo Rey. El lder del equipo es un rumano que ha
estado en Nicaragua por cerca de un ao. La polica incaut un total
de siete tarjetas y una cantidad de efectivo.
Ampliacin de Pista Juan Pablo II
Un paquete de financiamiento de US $ 136 millones garantizado
por el Gobierno de Nicaragua del Banco Europeo de Inversiones
(BEI) financiar el trabajo de un proyecto para mejorar y ensanchar
la Pista Juan Pablo II en la Ciudad de Managua (desde cerca de la
Embajada de los Estados Unidos en el oeste; hasta la Carretera
Norte). El proyecto aumentar la capacidad, reducir la congestin
en los perodos pico y mejorar la seguridad de los conductores. El
proyecto consiste en ensanchar la ruta a tres carriles en cada

Venezuela renuncia a la Organizacin de Estados
Americanos (OEA)
Samuel Moncada, Representante Permanente de Venezuela ante la

CINCO de MAYO,
a Famous Party
M any people confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexico's
Independence Day (which actually falls on September 16th).
More accurately called El Da de la Batalla de Puebla (The
Day of the Battle of Puebla), the 5th of May is celebrated to honor
Mexico's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-
Mexican War of 1861-1867, where the Mexicans were outnumbered but
were able to defeat the huge French army.
The Battle
In 1862, Mexico was enduring a particularly violent and chaotic time in their history.
Having gained independence from Spain in 1821, the struggles that followed (including
internal political takeovers and wars (the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 and the
Mexican Civil War of 1858) had brought the country to its knees financially. Mexico had
accumulated a heavy debt load shared between several other countries, including; Spain,
England and France who all demanded repayment. The US debt had been settled
following the Mexican-American War. France, eager to expand its empire, used the debt
as a way of establishing its own leadership in Mexico. However, Spain and England did
not support such a move. When Mexico stopped making loan payments, France took
action to install Archduke Maximilian of Austria as ruler of Mexico.
France landed at Veracruz and began the march of about 600 miles to Mexico City. The
US was busy with its own Civil War and was unable to help. The French encountered
strong resistance near Puebla at the Mexican forts of Loreto and Guadalupe. The
Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin, with only a poorly armed militia of 4,500
men, was able to defeat the well-equipped French army of 6,500 soldiers. This stopped
the invasion in its tracks.
The victory was used by Mexico to ignite a new level of patriotism and develop a much
needed sense of national unity and was the cause for the historical date's celebration.
The bad news was that the victory was short lived as upon hearing about the loss at
Puebla, Napoleon III (against the wishes of his people) sent more troops to Mexico and
eventually deposed the Mexican army, took over Mexico City and installed Maximilian
as the ruler of Mexico. However, that rule was also short lived (1864 to 1867) as the post
American Civil War US began to provide more political and military assistance to
Mexico to expel the French.
The Celebration
Despite the eventual French invasion of Mexico City, Cinco de Mayo became the
popular celebration to honor the bravery and victory of General Zaragoza and his militia
at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
Mexican immigrants coming to the American southwest joined in the festivities with
their fellow Mexican-Americans, already living in the United States (and without really
knowing the story behind the holiday). Over time, Cinco de Mayo became more of an
opportunity to celebrate Mexican ethnic identity rather than celebrate the actual battle
itself. In Mexico, the celebration is still only a regional holiday throughout the state of
Puebla and with a few limited events in other parts of Mexico.
The day is more widely celebrated in the United States than in Mexico with the largest
Cinco de Mayo celebrations taking place in Los Angeles, California (which has the
highest concentration of Mexican-origin population in the USA). The
commercialization in the United States (to a willing audience) has been led mainly by
Mexican food and beverage companies supported by music and dance which play an
important part in all of the celebrations. The result being that Cinco de Mayo has become
a bigger holiday north of the border than it is to the south.

Unidos (y sin saber realmente la historia detrs de la fiesta). Con el tiempo 5 de mayo se
convirti en ms de una oportunidad para celebrar la identidad tnica mexicana en lugar
de celebrar la batalla real en s. En Mxico, la celebracin sigue siendo slo una fiesta
regional en todo el estado de Puebla y con algunos eventos limitados en otras partes de
Mxico.
El da se celebra ms ampliamente en los Estados Unidos que en Mxico, donde se
celebran las mayores celebraciones del Cinco de Mayo en Los ngeles, California (que
tiene la mayor concentracin de poblacin de origen mexicano en Estados Unidos). La
comercializacin en los Estados Unidos (a un pblico dispuesto) ha sido liderada
principalmente por compaas mexicanas de alimentos y bebidas apoyadas por la msica
y la danza que juegan un papel importante en todas las celebraciones. El resultado es que
el Cinco de Mayo se ha convertido en un da de fiesta ms grande al norte de la frontera
que al sur.

Successful Photography Workshop

T he use of social networks as a tool for the promotion of SME's (Small and Medium
Enterprises) from the tourist product or service sector has become an essential
part of their development. Achieving the effectiveness of this tool requires the
efficient use of visual resources, photography being an important factor in promotion in
the digital era.
Based on the above, Del Sur News, the Nicaraguan Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR)
San Juan Del Sur chapter and its strategic allies: SET NET COMUNICACIONES, El
Globo Restaurant, Vivian Restaurant and Sunset Hotel joined forces to give the First
Workshop of Basic Techniques of Photography and as well How to construct an image
in the digital era.
The photography workshop was given by the professional photographer Bismarck
Picado who covered very specific topics such as; use and protection of the camera, types
of cameras, composition, apertures and distractions, among other basic topics that should
be understood when taking a photo.

Our course is based on the perspective that the trainee knows a little photography or at
least has faced the challenge of taking a photo for his or her business. It was a very
positive day and from now on they will not need to take pictures in the automatic setting!"
said Bismarck.
The second part of the day, How to construct an image in the digital era was delivered
by Adelayde Rivas Sotelo, Director of SET NET COMUNICACIONES who explained
the typical errors that some companies make when they publish on social networks.
"It struck me that the 15 people that attended the course all had a professional cameras
which indicates that tourist SME's are aware of the need to have good photographs so I
focused on teaching them new digital tools that they can use with those images," said the
expert.
Mara Auxiliadora Silva, General Manager of Del Sur News and Coordinator of the San
Juan del Sur Chapter of CANATUR said; "Technical assistance and constant training for
the business sector (as demanding as tourism) is vital for economic development,
especially as international and national demands increase."
The event ended with the delivery of certificates of participation to the 15 attendees on
April 27th who received their knowledge from the hand of experts in the field of
communication.

l uso de las redes sociales como herramienta para la promocin de
las pymes de productos o servicios tursticos, se ha convertido en
parte esencial para el desarrollo de las mismas. Lograr la
efectividad de esa herramienta, obliga a utilizar eficientemente los
recursos visuales; siendo la fotografa una alternativa para dicha
promocin en la era digital.
Basado en lo anterior, Del Sur News, la Cmara Nicaragense de Turismo (CANATUR),
captulo San Juan Del Sur y sus aliados estratgicos: SET NET COMUNICACIONES,
Restaurante El Globo, Restaurante Vivian y Hotel Sunset, juntaron esfuerzos para
impartir el Primer Taller de Tcnicas Bsicas de fotografa y el taller titulado Cmo
construir una imagen en la era digital.
El taller de fotografa fue impartido por el fotgrafo profesional Bismarck Picado, quien
abord temas muy puntuales como: uso y proteccin de la cmara, tipos de cmaras,
composicin, aperturas, distracciones entre otros tpicos bsicos que se deben conocer al
momento de tomar una foto.
Nuestro curso est basado desde la perspectiva que el capacitado conoce un poco de
fotografa o al menos se ha enfrentado al desafo de hacer una foto para su negocio. Fue
muy positivo el encuentro, de ahora en adelante se olvidarn de hacer fotos en
automtico, dijo el experto.
El taller Cmo construir una imagen en la era digital, fue impartido por la Msc.
Adelayde Rivas Sotelo, directora de SET NET COMUNICACIONES, quien explic los
errores que comenten algunas empresas al momento de publicar en las redes sociales.
Me llam la atencin que todos los que asistieron al curso, las 15 personas, tenan
cmara profesional, lo que indica que las pymes tursticas estn conscientes de la
necesidad de tener una buena foto, por ello me enfoqu en ensearles nuevas
herramientas digitales en las que utilizaran esas imgenes, inform la experta.
Por su parte Mara Auxiliadora Silva, Gerente General de Del Sur News y coordinadora
de CANATUR, capitulo San Juan del Sur; dijo La asistencia tcnica y la constante
capacitacin, para un sector tan demandante como es el turismo, son vitales para el
desarrollo econmico, ms an cuando las demandas internacionales y nacionales

El evento finaliz con la entrega de certificados de participacin a los 15 asistentes el da
27 de abril quienes recibieron todo el conocimiento de la mano de expertos en la materia
