Introduction/Overview
In honor of the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, students will learn the fundamentals of
the Declaration of Independence and they way in which it was birthed.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn the year the Declaration was drafted, what were the 13 original
states, the first sentence of the Declaration, five authors of the Declaration, why there
was a revolution and against whom.
Curriculum alignment
Nevada Social Studies Standards Content Standard C13.0 - Citizenship and the Law -
Students know why society needs rules, laws, and government and understand the
roles, rights, and responsibilities of citizens.
Materials needed
For teacher:
Declaration of Independence powerpoint projected onto SmartBoard
For Students:
One sheet of blank paper

Pre-activities
Students will have blank paper ready to take notes
Activities
Students will examine powerpoint through note taking and class discussion

Slide 1 (5 mins) Photo of Declaration of Independence, with date July 4th, 1776
above the opening sentence.
Ask students what they think the first sentence of the Declaration
means.
Slide 3 (45 mins) Video: Who Won the American Revolution? (15 minutes)
Have students take notes on video
After video, call on each student in order of desk arrangement and
have them elaborate on one thing they found interesting from the
video. (30 minutes)
Slide 4-8 (5 minutes)5 slides with a picture and short biography of five prominent
authors of the Declaration of Independence.
Assessment-
The assessment will be made during the students responses to the video
