 INTRODUCTION
Palm OS is also known as Garnet OS. It is a discontinued
mobile operating system developed by Palm,inc. Since It is
personaly developed for the Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) in
1996, the palm OS platform defined the trends and
expectations for mobile computing. For example the personal
organizers use handheld though mobile information devices as
essential business tools and even the ability to access the
internet or a central corporate application and data via a
wireless connection. Palm OS was designed for ease of use with
a touchscreen-based graphical user interface which is provided
with a suite of basic applications for personal information
management. The later versions of OS have been extended to
support the smartphones.

Windows CE OS is also known as Windows Embedded

Compact or Windows Embedded CE. It is an operating system
developed by Microsoft as part of its Windows Embedded family
products. In 1995, Microsoft started the development of the new
operating system, Windows CE under the code name Pegasus.
The graphical user interface and usability has similarities with
Windows 95 and has been designed especially for small
footprint devices and embedded systems. Windows CE is
different from the windows operating systems for desktops but
they share similar application programming interfaces for a
considerable number of classes. For example, the devies that
runs on Windows CE include industrial controllers, poiont of sale
terminals, cable set-top boxes, cameras and internet
appliances.

 FUNCTIONS AND
CHARACTERISTICS

PALM OS
Palm OS is an Operating System developed for handheld
devices. Its was designed for high efficient running of small
productivity programs for devices with a few application tasks.
Its a single processing method which offers high performance. A
special features is that it supports only one process which
controls all computations by event handlers. Users use the
application at any given time, one-application program must be
completed before the next one can be selected. This restriction
makes the operating system to dedicate full attention on an
open application. The space, there are needed by the system
for every application running is a dynamic, reusable random
access memory (RAM). Database related application stored in
persistent storage, but it is a permanent storage RAM. Palm OS
divides an application into code that can be run and the
different types of data elements, such as elements interface
and icons. Data elements can be changed easily without the
need to rewrite the code.

 Palm OS license to decide which of the applications
available on Palm device OS of them. License can also
customize the application. On a newermodel, the application of
the standard PIM address, date book, memo pad and to-
dos has been replaced by the contacts, calendar, memo
and tasks.
The Palm address program stores contact information,
keyed by the user. Entries will be displayed ad sorted in last
name, first name order (this can be changed only to Company,
Last Name order). There are five slots for phone or e-mail, each
of which may be designated Work, Home, Fax, Other, E-mail,
Main, Pager or Mobile (the slot designations cannot be
changed). Newer Contact application adds the following
features: several addresses, 9 new fields: Website, Birthday,
More phone numbers, Instant Messaging with quick connect.

Calculator
Palm pocket change into a standard four-function calculator
with three shades of blue and purple buttons contrasting with
the two red clear buttons. Supporting the square root and
percentage keys and has one memory. It also has an option to
display a running history of the calculations, much like the
paper-tape calculators were once common.

Date Book
This shows daily or weekly schedule, or a simple monthly view.
The daily schedule has one line per hour, between user-selected
start and end times. Click on an empty line create a new event.
Empty lines are crowded by actual events, the start and stop
times are shown by default bracketed on the left side.

Calendar
It is an application adds the following features: New Views of
the day, the use of the category for the event, the location of
the event, the event may span midnight, details of events,

birthdays as timeless events. Support the time zone designation
for the event, a feature lacking in some new contenders again.
An event, or an appointment, can be heralded by an alarm, a
number of minutes, hours or days before it starts. This alarm
sounds even if the unit is turned off. Appointments can recur
within a given day, week, month or year and can contain notes.

Load
Expense tracks common business expenses. Not total
calculated by Palm. Users should be in sync with the host
computer and view the expense data in a worksheet (templates
for Microsoft Excel provided)

HotSync
Hotsync integrated with PC users. Usually activated by pressing
a button on the Palm cradle HotSync physical (dock station),
this application communicates with a pipeline of PC desktop to
install the software, database backup, or merge changes made
on a PC or handheld device to the second device. It can
communicate with PC via a physical connection (USB on newer
models, although the drivers for x64-based Windows platform is
still available, 32-bit edition works well), Bluetooth or IrDA
wireless connections, and network connections directly on the
device with networking capabilities

Characteristics
1. Software
Pocket PC is integrated with MS Word, Excel and Power point.
The mandatory application of Windows-based PC. While Palm is
not accompanied by an application such as Microsoft's Pocket
PC (please be advised). But that does not mean Palm OS worse
for business applications supporting jobs. Palm OS Applications

Office is even better than that available on the Pocket PC. So,
we can still create a document with up via a Palm PDA. Power
Point can be used in applications that are popularly called To Go
Professional. Even Excel charts that cannot be displayed on the
Pocket PC, can actually be present in the Palm OS.
2. Organizer
Most important in the organizer capabilities of the handset is
contact management, calendar and reminder functions (to do
list). If we buy a PDA is to organize the work, then the Palm
operating system can be selected. Many people feel more
comfortable using the Palm because it is easier to setup the
organizer. There are lots of clicks to be done and faster.
3. Outlook
If we consider it important PDA integration with Outlook, Pocket
PC has advantages because it can be done right. While the
standard Palm applications cannot do integration with Outlook.

Later, PDA-based Palm has issued its own synchronization

synchronizing. We must select the first choice Backup / Restore

developed with the emergence of Windows Mobile 5.0, which is

WINDOWS CE

Windows CE is one of the newest members of the Windows

family. It enable a large and varied number of electronic devices
to run Windows. It has been an amazing success and it
promises to revolutionize the way people carry information
around. This exciting new platform from Microsoft enable people
to have access to the information they normally keep on the
desktop PCs and on their corporate networks in the palm of
their hand, where they need it. Window CE has the look and feel
of the windows operating system we use on our PCs. It is not

just Windows made smaller, but has designed from scratch to
include some of the best features of the desktop operating
systems. Instant on and touch-sensitive screens are two
Windows CE features. Windows CE integrates with our desktop
Window PC seamlessly and if weve recorded information,
whether it be a name and address, a business report or a voice
recorded note that can transfer information to our PC without
the nned to retype it. Windows CE save our time and effort.
With Windows CE we can quickly and easily find information
that stored in the system.
Instant On
When we stich on our computer it instantly comes on. While we
leave 5 applications running and switched off the device, the
next time when we switched on, all the applications will still be
open and all the data remains there.
Battery life
Handheld PCs and Palm-size PCs have been designed with good
battery life in mind. Usually the Handheld PC constantly stay up
to 8 hours and Palm-size PC stays up more than 20 hours.
Compare to many laptops these days have batteries that last
only 2 to 3 hours.
Memory size
The amount of memory shipped in each device varies from 4Mb
up to 32Mb
Handheld and Palm-size PC
Palm-size PCs are the smallest of all Windows CE devices and
able to fit into a pocket while Handheld PCs are slightly
biggerand larger. Handheld PCs have a physical keyboard and
this, along with the larger screen allows people to be a little
more creative. Palm-size PCs do not have a keyboard. Instead,
they have SIP (Software Input Panel) which provides a software
keyboard and handwriting recognition. This is the only method
that the data can get into the Palm-size PC. Another feature of
Palm-size PCs is voice Recorder, which can be activated without
even switching the machine on.

Palm OS Advantages
Palm has a system needs a little bit fast and so does not
need a PDA device that is sophisticated and expensive, does
not require a lot of memory to be able to run well. Extremely
low cost especially for small production volume or intermittent
uses, a simple user interface intended specifically for non-
technical users and comparatively rapid program development
and debug. Palm handhelds have several major advantages
over Pocket PCs. One is the much longer battery life. Another is
that the Palm OS supports previous generation features so that

programs dont become obsolete every time a new generation
of products is released. Also, since Palm has the majority
market share for handhelds, the potential user is more likely to
already have the required handheld. It is also a cheap device,
almost disposable.

Palm OS Disadvantages
Does not have an external storage media or extra, though
it can be filled in a program, software or application but cannot
be installed with a capacity that much because only memory
limitations. In addition, the company which developed the Palm
has stopped then the possibility of the development of the Palm
program will no longer exist and development is currently
possible only in the form of support for Palm products long
products.
Palm devices are that the small screen size makes
displaying large quantities of data impractical. Another is that
the lack of a built-in keyboard makes local manual data entry
tedious at best. Add-on keyboards do exist, but the average
user doesnt have one. A perceived disadvantage is that the
processor speed is slower than Pocket PCs and laptops. In the
first place, this is changing because Palm is developing faster
processors. Some of the latest Palm handhelds run at over 400
MHz. In the second place, neither a Palm handheld nor a Pocket
PC is a satisfactory platform for data processing because
neither has an adequate display. If the data is going to be
moved to another platform for processing anyway, then the
local processing speed is not as important. These devices have
smaller screen, fewer fields per screen.

Windows CE Advantages
The advantages of the Windows CE is the office features a
fully-equipped plus integration with Microsoft Outlook and

Exchange services makes Windows Mobile devices most
powerful smartphone for business people, ease of tweaking,
multitasking capabilities become a mainstay of this OS.
Windows CE devices is very stable, so when we move from one
feature to another feature will not happen trouble and be very
fast. Free windows mobile is different in every device. It is also
have larger screens, better resolution, more fields per screen to
manage tasks easily. Relative code portability from the desktop

Windows CE Disadvantages
The disadvantages of Windows CE are that less user
friendly for the user to get know what they really want to get. It
so requires a deeper understanding of the Windows CE.
Sometimes the operating system seems to get slow. Less
responsive and somehow dries battery real quick. Code
portability might depend on OS features to used. The colour
screens almost unreadable in daylight, while at night it is great
to use. They have a short battery life, which can be a problem
depending on usage model. It is one of the expensive devices,
which is a factor in a harsh environment.

CONCLUSION

 Since the beginning of Palm OS, it has set the trend for
most mobile communications. Today Palm OS runs on two of
every three PDAs and accounts for eighty-five percent of what
business is on their standard handheld list. "PalmSource has
encouraged innovation and maintained a strong focus on
providing customers with the right solutions to meet their
needs". (PalmSource) A close competitor for Palm OS is
Windows CE. Windows CE is a small version of the windows
operating system for use with portable devices. Each has its
advantages and disadvantages and as it is now debated as a
better OS to use. Palm OS has and will most likely continue to
redefine market expectations and lead the world in mobile
platforms. While Windows CE is a very complete official feature
that helps office work and is very stable. The weakness of the
windows mobile operating system is less user friendly so
requires a deeper understanding, the operating system seems
slow, less responsive and somewhat wasteful battery. May have
the virus attacks to windows.
