7TH GRADE SCIENTIST

Learning by Example September 2017

Scientist of the month

Dr. Mae Jemison was the first Female Astronaut of color in the USA.
She was a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Endeavour from
September 12-20 1992, conducting experiments in the weightless envi-
ronment of space. Through hard work and a love of Science, Dr.
Jemison graduated from high school and started college at the age of
16!

Team Assignment
The week of 18-22 requires a lot of collaboration! You can use any re-
source/format for your presentations (see me if you need assistance with
power point) but every team must submit a 1 page written report that has
been collaborated and approved by every group member. Everyone needs
to know the content, be expecting to answer questions.
You will find the rubric on the class page.
Presentations throughout the week, volunteer your group before all the best
slots are taken!

Science project heads up

Pick your experiment and turn in a well written paragraph describing
your project before you go trick-or-treating (due Oct 31)
If you want to use live animals (yes siblings are animals also) talk to me
for a thumbs-up before proceeding.

Cells: Building blocks of the

body
Im sure you have been thinking, Mr. Lewis, when are we going to get to start the
unit on cells? We love Biology so much! Well, Ive got great news because now is
that time!

Here are all the wonderful things you will know when we are finished. Hold onto
your seats because its really good!
Conceptual knowledge of the unit
What is the basic unit of all forms of life?
group of tissues that work together to perform closely related functions is
called?
diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane is called?
What is the small, dense region within most nuclei in which the assembly of
proteins begins?

The best part (Oh, you are going to love this! ) How these systems interact and work
together in order to assemble every living thing on this planet, if we find life else-
where in the universe they may be assembled from something else entirely!
This class is reacting to the news that they
will spend the next few weeks working on
cell structure!

you? Well, heres a list of
skills some experts
(whom I happen to agree
with) believe will be im-
portant for you as future
adult citizens.
