SCO:108-3 demonstrate respect

for the habitats of animals and the
local environment when collecting
rocks and/or minerals from their
local area (108-3)

104-6 describe the distinction

between minerals and rocks

Brief lesson description Students will go outside and

collect rock/minerals from our
habitat. They will return to class
and discuss the 5 rocks they
found. They will be given a
worksheet and do an online
scavenger hunt with websites I
have provided to find the
answers for the worksheet. The
worksheet is on the properties of
a rock/mineral.

ISTE standards: Communicate and

collaborate

Conduct research and use

information

Use technology effectively

and productively

Collect and analyze data

Technology resources needed: Geocaches

Class set of Ipads (group

for everyone)

(introduction of new
terminology)

Compare and contrast sheet

using Ipads for online
resources as well as App for
drawing.

Procedure (60 minute period): Students will go on a

scavenger hunt outdoors (in
the forest near school
property).

Students will be geocaching

to find rocks within out
habitat.

During the hunt, they were

asked to collect and
assortment of rocks varying
in texture, color, shape and
size. Five in total.

We will return to the class

and work on a worksheet.

I will have also collected five

rocks and will describe them
to the class using
descriptive words as an
exemplar of how I wish the
students to describe their
rocks on their worksheet.
For example, I will say if
something is smooth in
texture or scratchy like
sandpaper. I will say if it is
heavy or light.

I will give a worksheet out

that they must complete
using their Ipads and the
websites Ive given, the sites
include youtube videos
about the properties of a
rock/mineral.

* There is a section on the

worksheet that asks students
to use an App on their Ipad and
draw the rock/mineral. That
section will be completed and
then assessed by me when
they are finished.

if it hasnt, they will redo it until it
has met my expectations. (See
