Swimming, floating, fleeing, sinking, how to absorb
millions of climatic refugees?
Artificial islands are territorial fragments. They are
constructed and destructed in a cycle that concentrates
many of the forces characterizing human civilization.
With this consideration, Sydney harbour used to be
the refuge for fourteen islands. Eight of them survived
urbanization pressure and remained with their original
feature - being surrounded by water.
Cockatoo Island - the biggest in the bay - has stratified
the historical development of the city, from an original
quarry for convicts to a school, a prison, later a shipyard
for Australian Navy and now a cultural venue. As a
matter of facts, the island has always been a laboratory
for human operation.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
For Urban Islands 10th anniversary, our project, Collective
Simulacra, explores various methods of representation and
the potential to bridge the connection between signs, fictions,
and historical events, by challenging old historical scenarios
in new settings through performances. The project focuses on
Cockatoo Island as part of a much larger eco-system namely
Sydney Harbour. From The South Pacific Ocean to the narrow
entrance of the Parramatta River, the twenty-five kilometres of
water stretch unfolds an extraordinary geography composed
of a multitudes of curved bays and support of a very rich
ecosystem.
Having beared the weight of fortification, confinement and
facilitating lives of the aborigines and European settlers, the
14 islands are vivid witnesses of social convolution in the past
a few hundred years. Their transformation is more than just
an answer to the social request but also a reflection of the
trajectory of world colonization and the changing ecosystem.
After years of domestication, the 14 Islands and the water edge
turn into natural setting, supporting the urban and economic
development of the city. The map outlines the major part of the
harbour that centres on the 14 islands.
Cockatoo Island, at the geographical centre of this ecosystem,
shares indispensable characteristics with the rest of the islands
dispersed in the Sydney Harbour, and offers a concentration of
all the stories and their possible evolution in the future. Their
historical roles, under simultaneous influence in the changing
historical settings, are either similar or linked. Therefore, the
project not only resorts to a mere analysis of the cockatoo island
but looks to a bigger picture by underscoring the important
events associated with all islands along with the invisible
transport and migration lines, and foreshore environment. The
proposition to construct a collective knowledge of the Harbour
is with the intention to provide an overlooking perspective of
the influx of enculturation, conciliation and conflicts, to help
better comprehend and appreciate the background settings
behind the formation of the role of Cockatoo Island, and to
inspire excogitation through the stories on the counterparts of
Cockatoo Island.
Highlighted keywords on the map can be traced to
corresponding cards where a story is unfolded on each, and
the cards are linked back to the map through matching codes.
Through this archival system, stories can be easily located and
an overview is made more evident in illustrating the contextual
interrelation based on historical convolution associated with
geographic proximity.
STORIES BY CATEGORIES
A-Islands
Selective stories in regard to existing islands which adorn the
beautiful stretch of sydney harbour will be addressed under this
categories. Originally there were 14 islands. Two, once had been
separated by a narrow stretch of shallow water, were joined to
form the present Spectacle Island. Five others, formerly islands,
Garden, Bennelong, Darling, Glebe and Berry Islands, were
joined to the mainland. The other remaining islands are Shark,
Clark, Fort Denison, Goat, Cockatoo, Snapper and Rodd
Islands.
B-Floating Devices
Different classes of boats, public ferry routes, harbour regulations
mapping including marine navigation and special events can be
considered as floating devices on Sydney Harbour. Such devices
indicate the roles of human beings within the overall ecosystem.
Visible wrecks and dangerous point signs are two examples that
show mankinds will to protect marine species and themselves.
C-Anchor Devices
Lighthouse, control towers, wharfs and other relatively fixed
elemnets which are located along sydney harbour can be
considered as Anchor devices. Such devices are generally
treated as landmarks and have significant impact to local
cultural contexts.
D-Water/Coast Lines
Marine flora and fauna and information regarding costal
geology form major parts of the water and coast line stories.
Seagrass bed, mud flat and salt marsh are typical geological
characteristics of Sydney Harbour.

A - ISLAND
Alexander Berry - Berry Island was part of a grant of land
made by Governor Macquarie to Alexander Berry and Edward
Wollstonecraft in 1820 and is named after Alexander Berry.
Biennale - The Biennale has a long history of exhibiting in
non-museum spaces, like Cockatoo Island. The Island was first
used in 2008. It was the decision of the then artistic director
Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev. The site lent itself to her theme:
Revolutions Forms That Turn.

Common Robbery - Clark Island gets its name from
Lieutenant Ralph Clark, an officer of the first fleet who
cultivated the island as a vegetable garden in 1789 after arriving
with the First Fleet the year before. The vegetable garden
proved unsuccessful as the vegetables were continually stolen.
Fitzory - The remote location of the NSW colony meant that
it required its own facilities to build and repair ships, especially
those of the Royal Navy. Governor George Gipps argued that
Cockatoo Island was the perfect place to construct such a
facility. Approval was given and the construction of the Fitzroy
Dock began in 1848.
Grain Silos - In early 19th century, innovative technology were
employed to construct a series of grain silos to carry over rice
and wheat imported. The convict was required to chip away at
the sandstone with a chisel and can only allowed freedom from
the confinement when they had excavated the required amount
of rock.
Goat - Since goat was the most common food on the island
during colonized period, the island is named as Goat Island.
Historical Artefacts - A visit to Spectacle Island is tantamount
to travelling back through time as the island collects over 100
years of the Royal Australian Navys history. The island is home
to over half-a-million individual items that represent every
single maritime operation that the Royal Australian Navy has
ever been involved in.
Home for boys and girls - The girls came down abreast of
the ship, in a semi-nude state, throwing stones at the windows
of the workshops blaspheming dreadfully and conducting
themselves more like fiends than human beings. I was compelled
to send our boys onto the lower deck to prevent them viewing
Pyrmont 13 was the first landfall in Australia for hundreds of

Military Fortress - A fort was built on the island in 1841 to
protect Sydney Harbour from attack by foreign vessels. The
newly built fort took its current name from Governor William
Thomas Denison. However, developments in artillery rendered
the fort largely obsolete by the time it was completed.
Museum - In 1952, Forsythe decided to set up the Snapper
Island Company and establish a museum on the island, the
income from which would go towards the ongoing maintenance
of the island. The museum held thousands of pieces of
memorabilia from Australians naval history.
Pollution - The abattoir of Glebe Island had outlived its
usefulness and was the subject of constant complaints about the
smells as well as the pollution of the surrounding harbour. It was
shut in 1915, the work removed to a new abattoir at Homebush
and the Glebe Island structure was demolished in the 1920s.
Restricted - Access to Garden Island is restricted, due to it
being a military base. There is a PublicAccess Area on the
northern end of Garden Island. The Royal Australian Navy
Heritage Centre is located within it.
Sandstone - Cockatoo Islanad, at the bifurcation of Iron Cove
and the Parramatta River in Port Jackson, was a densely forested
sandstone knoll. Convicts back then quarry the sandstone to
build their prison accommodation. Millions of cubic feet of
sandstone was also excavated from Sydneys Cockatoo Island to
create a dry dock on the island.
Tidal Island - Shallow as it was, the Bennelong Point, formerly
known as a tidal island consisting mostly of rocks and a small
beach, concealed and revealed itself in accordance with the
natural tidal movement. It was a part of the Port Jackson during
daytime. But when the night descends, the shallow part of the
Bennelong island submerged into the rising tides, leaving the
Bennelong point an island.
Unbroken - Unbroken, an epic drama that follows the
incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis Louie
Zamperini who survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal
plane crash during World War. The film is shot on Cockatoo
Island, directed and produced by Angelina Jolie.
Pyrmont - From 1951, the wharf on Darling Island known as
thousands of post-war immigrants.
B - FLOATING DEVICES
24 Hours - Pink moorings situated through the harbour are
available for only 24 hours per vessel.
Asylum Sekers - Asylum seekers have attempted to reach
Australia on boats from Indonesia, often paying large sums of
money to people smugglers. Hundreds have died making the
dangerous journey.
Dolphins - Australia respects neighbourhood even underwater.
As the metro Sydney grows up, Dolphins began to complain
the limited number of living habitat. The New South Wales
government finally made the decision of the number of water
reserved zone, including Snails Bay, to protect the dolphin
community.
Edward Lombe 1834 - On a bitterly cold night in August
1834, the three-masted barque battled to find shelter inside the
heads before it broke into pieces off Middle Head taking down
12 passengers with her.
Itata 1906 - The massive explosion which destroyed the 950
tonne coal ship Itata in 1906 could be heard 20 kilometres away
in Newcastle.
Mortlake Bank - Abandoned in 1972, wreck of the coal ship
Mortlake Bank lies in the shallows of Homebush Bay.
All the hulks of Homebush can be seen from above on Google
Maps.
Oysters - Oysters can be found internationally. Eating steamed
oyster was founded by Chinese gold diggers. They travelled by
boats all the way from Hong Kong land, and oyster was the only
food. When the boat stopped at Bali for goods trading, a box
of oysters was accidently dropped into the water Yummy the
tropical steamed oyster!
Rowers - Three rowers were selected to represent Australia at
the Athens Olympic Games, K Foulkes, R Jahrling & J L Winter
in 2004.
SS DEE WHY - One of Sydneys most famous ferries, it was
scuttled as the first wreck at the Long Reef Wreck Site on 25
May 1976. The old ferry is a tragic site lying on the 46 metres
deep sandy floor. Visitors can still explore inside the wreck,
between the boilers but the engines and props are gone.
C - ANCHOR DEVICES
Admiralty House - Admiralty House is the official Sydney
residence of the Governor-General of Australia. It is located in
the suburb of Kirribilli, on the northern foreshore of Sydney
Harbour.Its current name originates in the fact that it served as
the residence for the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Navys
Australia Squadron from 1885 to 1913.
Lighthouse - A lighthouse is a tower, building, or other type
of structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and
lenses, and to serve as a navigational aid for maritime pilots
at sea or on inland waterways. It marks dangerous coastlines,
hazardous shoals, reefs, and safe entries to harbors, and can
assist in aerial navigation.
Man OWar Steps - The only known remains of Macquarie-
era harbour works still in existence in Sydney Harbour, in
what appears to be its original configuration, and still in daily
use. A valuable relic of the Old Navy days when men of
war anchored in Farm Cove and when waterman plied on
the harbour. Also the source of one of the longest-running
bureaucratic correspondences in the history of NSW. (Tranter
1990)
Submarine Cable - Submarine telecommunications cables
are cables that lie on the seafloor and connect Australia with
other countries. Australias submarine communications cables
carry over 99 per cent of our international voice and data
traffic and are a vital component of our national infrastructure.
Sydney Heads - Sydney Heads is known as the Heads. It
forms two km wide entrance to Sydney Harbor. The North
Head located in the Sydney Harbour National Park. The South
Head located near Hornby Lighthouse.
Sydney Ports Corporation - A corporation owned by
the Government of New South Wales, is responsible for the
management, development and operation seaport facilities
within metropolitan Sydney. Sydney Ports is established
pursuant to the State Owned Corporations Act, 1989.
Sydney Quarantine Station - The Sydney Quarantine pass by Sydney harbour in their annual migration north. On
Station is located on North Head and is one of the few still-
existing facilities that once operated in each state of Australia
until the 1980s. In 1975, Vietnamese refugees were housed in
this station.
D - WATER
Blue Swimmer Crab - Blue swimmer crabs, also known as
sand crabs or blue manna crabs, are swimming crabs that have
their last pair of legs modified to act as paddles. Found in coastal
waters from Cape Naturaliste in Western Australia, around the
top end to NSW. The Victorian border is the southern limit for
distribution of the species on the east coast.
Catchment - Managing the catchment is in order to protect
the health of the catchments to ensure reliable, quality drinking
water is available for the 4.5 million people of Sydney and the
Illawarra, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, Goulburn and
Shoalhaven regions.
Fauna - This figure can be put into perspective when compared
with 540 species recorded from the Mediterranean Sea
(Helfman, Collette & Facey (2009) and 276 from UK coastal
waters to a depth of 200 m (Crimmen pers.comm.).
Port Jackson Shark - The Port Jackson shark is a migratory
species, traveling south in the summer and returning north to
breed in the winter months. It feeds on hard-shelled mollusks,
crustaceans, sea urchins, and fish. Identification of this species
is very easy due to the pattern of harness-like markings which
cross the eyes, run along the back to the first dorsal fin, then
cross the side of the body, in addition to the spine in front of
both dorsal fins.
Sea Level Rise - It is predicted that by 2100, sea levels could
rise up to 0.74m, flushing water through our cities and greatest
landmarks. Its not looking good for Cairns, Byron Bay and
the Gold Coast, while Brisbane and Sydney airports are under
threat. The Sydney Botanic Gardens will also be flooded.
Sepia Mestus - Sepia mestus, known as the Red Cuttle, or
Reaper Cuttlefish is commonly found in shallow rocky reefs
and is often seen by divers, sheltered under overhanging rock
ledges.
Whale Watching - One of Sydney Harbours winter attraction
is whale watching. Between early June and early August they
the way to their breeding grounds in the Great Barrier Reef,
they have been known to spend several days in and around the
harbour enthralling spectators.

STORY TELLING
Confinement Cell Soliloquy
Inside the solitary confinement cells, imaginary voices once only
inside the prisoners head during confinement are recreated to
translate the complex sensation into tangible embodiment of
auditory experiences.
Tension
The performance is located in the platform facing to the
water with glimpse to Spectacle Island and Schnapper Island,
emerging dual formats of writting as a mode of storytelling. The
territory and the body are both supporting this performance
to convey the dialogue between ephemeral and permanent,
between visibility and invisiblity.
Wishing Tree
The crane is percevied as a tree which has been standing on
cockatoo island for a long time. Black and yellow caution tape is
used for wishes towards immigrants and refugees to be written
upon. We tell stories by the act of writing, attaching and reading
the wishes.
Floating Message
Messages carried in bottles, released by men with stories, are
floating to unknown or designated destinations with a particular
purpose. The uncertainty that lies in the mismatching of
dialogue participants withholds possibilities of cross-culture
communication as well as communication amongst various
hierarchies.
Note in Food
Passing messages by means of concealing notes in bakery to
direct or inform behabvioural execution is an reinterpretation
of the conventional method to commnicate with inmates. The
unexpected discovery presents a spontaneous invitation to
unfolding the story.
