newworkbytheUKborn,BerlinandLondonbasedartistJosephinePryde(b.1967)May5
throughAugust1,2015.Theexhibitionisfreeandopentothepublic.
Prydesdualpracticesofphotographyandsculpturewillbeshowcasedinthisfirstsolo
presentationofherworkinanAmericaninstitution.Makinguseofthetechnicalandiconic
potentialofphotographyinitsvariousforms,Prydecreatesvisuallyarrestingandconceptually
preciseimagesthatplayupontherelationshipbetweentwodominanthistoricalusesofthe
camera:scientificanalysisandartisticendeavor.LapsesinThinkingbythePersonIAmwill
traveltoICAPhiladelphiainSeptember2015.
Prydesexhibitionswhichoftenfeaturesculpturalformsaswellasphotographyconnect
andflattensignifiersfrompolitical,popcultural,andarthistoricaldiscourses.In2011,for
instance,PrydeproducedItsNotMyBody,aseriesofdigitallyretouchedscansofafetusthat
superimposedanMRIscanontodesertlikelandscapesandintroducedpsychedeliccolors,
constructingfinalimagesthatwerestylisticallyfluentwithcertaintendenciespresentin
fashionphotography.Spatialrelationsbetweenworksarecarefullyconfiguredtocreate
allegorical,sometimesquasinarrativeinstallationsinwhichthecomplexnetworkofartwork, OldenburgerKunstverein
artist,exhibition,andinstitutionisforegroundedandperformed. Oldenburg,Germany
AtthecenterofPrydesexhibitionatCCAWattisInstituteisanewinstallationthattakesinto
considerationtheriseofinteractiveorrelationalartworksaskeysymboliceventsinthe
activitiesofculturalinstitutions,revisingtheroleofaudiencefromthatofviewershipto
experiencedrivenexchange.Afullyfunctioningrideonmodeltrainwilltravelalongapoint
topointtrack,installedinthemaingallery,whereitwillpassaseriesofframedphotographs
alongitsroute.
Thetrain,afreightlocomotiveintheUnionPacificlivery,pullingtwoboxcars,iscoveredin
thepatinaofminiaturizedgraffitiittakespassengersonabriefjourneythroughtheexhibition
atapproximately2milesperhour.Trainsbombedbygraffitiartists(inAmerica,doneso
withthethreatoffelonycharges)conjureanimagethatisbothaglobalizedurbantruismand
anemblemoftheshiftingdestinyofthegraffitiartist:afigureoflawlessselfexpressionbut
alsoaproponentofadisciplinenowcelebratedbycorporateexecutivesandurbanplanners.
ThetrainisshownalongsidePrydesnewphotographicseries,whichfeatureshandstouching,
andincontactwith,variousmaterials:theirownchest,atablet,aphone,atouchsensitivelamp
base.Thebodiesinthesephotographsarealwaysfaceless,andthephotographerusestight
anglesinwhichhandsexpress,author,control,andanimateaccordingtoslightdeviationsin

Theserelentlesscloseupsofhandstherewillbeabout20photographsonviewcreatea
semioticbodylanguagebetweentheworks,agesturalcodethatisdefinedbyhapticcontrol,
perhapsanattemptbyPrydetoconsidertheconsequencesofthemasstransferaltowardfinger
basedinteractivitywithtouchscreendevices.Theseworksalsoaddressclassicfeminist
critiquesofbodylanguage(thesocializeddifferencesofbehaviorbetweenmenandwomen)
andreferencethemanyworksmadebywomenartiststhatdeployimageryofhands:asymbol
ofdomesticlabor,idealizedfemininity,craft,andselfimage.
