GYMNOPEDIE #1
Eric Satie lived in France at the turn of the century. This is the first of three short pieces that he
composed for the piano, called “Trois Gymnopédies”. He makes much use of the major 7th and minor
7th chords, and the beauty of this piece lies in its simplicity. It should be played with an even rhythm
and careful attention should be given to the phrasing and colouring of the chords. The odd touch of
vibraro will help sustain the melody.
I recorded this piece on FIRST LADY OF THE GUITAR (CBS M35137) and it’s also included on
THE BEST OF LIONA BOYD (CBS 37788).
