Abstract

Internet Slang word found in Nicki Minaj Songs unpublished research

study. Bukidnon State University, Malaybalay City, 2017.

Language is dynamic. Language will perish or die unless it will be used in

subculture and dominant culture which is a characteristic of slang words/ term.

Slang is extensively used in the society and even embeds it to the lyrics of the song.

In view of this issue, this study was conducted to examine the commonly

used and type of slang embedded in the song of the famous rap and pop song

artist Nicki Minaj. The aim of the study is to distinguish what commonly used

and types of slangs are predominant. To answer the problem, the researcher

examined how frequent the slang terms are used in the song of Nicki Minaj and

what type of slang is use. A descriptive qualitative research design was used to

describe the data gathered through selection of songs found on Nicki Minaj. 5

songs are selected by the researcher as the subject of the study.

Findings revealed that among the six types of slang there are only 3

dominant slang types found in the songs. Flaming, Onomatopoeic and/or

stylized spellings and Letter Homophones. Also, the kind of culture, song and

artist will determine what kinds of song are abundant with slang words and

expression.

With these findings, the study has proved that street words or slang are

widespread in all areas of life which will soon take over the Standard English.
