HEBREWS 1 & 2 Study at Ballarat group and Stawell group.

WE HAVE A GREAT HIGH PRIEST.

The book of Hebrews is written in a systematic way to show us that Christ, as our High Priest, is
worthy to hold that office.

v1.2. OT God spoke through prophets. NT God spoke through His Son.
This is from man’s perspective as we know Christ inspired the prophets and also appeared
to some of the patriarchs and prophets. In the NT Christ has come down to dwell with us.

1:2. God made all things through His Son. Col 1:16.
1:2. Son is heir of all things. Rom 8:16.17. We become heirs with Him.

1:3. Son is brightness of Father’s glory. Col 2:9. ‘godhead’ = divinity, deity.
1:3. Son is express image of His Father’s person. Col 1:15. 2 Cor 4:4.

1:3. Son upholds all things. Col 1:17. ‘Consist’ Latin; ‘con’ ‘sisto’ – to stand.
Consistency – a standing together, being fixed in union, a body with its component parts
remaining fixed or operating in their appropriate places.
1:3. Son purged out sins. Heb 9:13.14.
1:3. Son sits on right hand of God. Heb 10:12.

Summary: God’s Son is CREATOR OF ALL. INHERITOR OF ALL. GODHEAD

HIS OWN. IMAGE OF GOD. UPHOLDS ALL. SITS ON GOD’S RIGHT HAND

GOD THE FATHER – SUPREME.

GOD’S SON – Also deity. Associate of Father. Great.

1:7.14. Angels are powerful beings. They are spirits sent to minister to us.
Can read out minds.
Write our life’s records.
Live in fourth dimension, can come into ours.
Can fly very fast. Daniel 9.

Now the study begins a comparison between THE SON and THE ANGELS. The author (Paul)
has chosen the highest beings in the universe below the Father and the Son as a comparison.

1:4. Son made so much better than angels.

Do not be concerned with the word ‘made’. My son was made in his grandfather’s image,
but he was still born of his mother.
1:4. More excellent name than the angels.
Michael – one like God.
Yeshua – Yahweh saves.
Jesus – Acts 4:12.
No. Not this name.

1:5. SON. Ps 2:7. Mat 3:17. (Why did Jesus die? Claimed to be the Son of God. Mark
14:61.62. Died for the truth)

1:5. Again --- Father – Son.

Remember this is a comparison between God’s Son and the angels. Sr White calls the
angels sons, but we must keep this last statement in context with the previous verse. God
1
cannot say to the angels the same as He says to His begotton Son. I am your Father; you
are my Son.

1:6 (first part) Again --- Son is ‘firstbegotten’ -- Brought into world. Col 1:15.

Remember, all these points in this chapter are speaking of the Son in heaven. Although it
mentions that He died for our sins, it is showing us the Son prior to the Incarnation. It says God
“brought” the firstborn into the world. In other words, God has a Son to send. John 3:16. God
could not say any of these things about the angels.

But even more:

1:8. God says of His Son ‘Thy throne O God’. Ps 45:6. The Son is God – meaning deity.
The word ‘God’ can be used as a proper noun and we generally think of the Father, but
Jesus is also divine, so He can be called God as well. We don’t usually say God the Son,
but it is actually correct. We don’t say it because the Bible does not. The Spirit of
Prophecy does not. And it would be confused with a Trinitarian position. We say the Son
of God.
The Son has life – unborrowed, underived, original. He is omnipotent, omniscient,
omnipresent, eternal just like His Father. He was born of God, so He inherited the same
nature as His Father. Just like the birth of our children, they inherit the same nature as
their parents.

1:9. Son has a God. Rev 3:12.

1:9. Son was anointed with oil above His fellows (meaning companions) This was possibly at
the great council where the Son was publicly declared to be equal with God, at the defection
of Lucifer. It could have been on this earth. Christ was anointed at the Counsel of peace
in eternity. At His dedication as a baby. At His baptism. At His inauguration as our High
Priest in heaven. He came to this earth as the Anointed One – Messiah (Hebrew); Christ
(Greek). Prov 8:23. ‘set up’. Same Hebrew word as in Ps 2:2 for ‘anointed’.

1:10. Son is Creator

1:11. Earth will perish, Son will remain.

1:12. Earth will be changed like garment. Christ years never fail.

1:13. Father says, ‘Son sit on my right hand…’ Ps 110:1. (Jesus challenged Pharisees on this
text. Matt 22:41-45. Luk 20:41-44) Heb 10:12.13.
1:13. I will make your enemies Thy footstool. 1 Cor 15:24-28.
“Jesus’ reign in union with His Father in the Father’s kingdom is co-existent with His
priestly ministration in the heavenly sanctuary. When He has finished His priestly work
and leaves the heavenly sanctuary, He delivers up the Father’s kingdom, takes His own
throne in the heavenly Jerusalem, the capital of His kingdom. R & H Vol 1 p33.

Summarise greatness of the Son – CREATOR OF ALL. INHERITOR OF ALL. GODHEAD HIS
OWN. IMAGE OF GOD. UPHOLDS ALL. SITS ON GOD’S RIGHT HAND. SON IS GOD.
HE HAS BEEN ANOINTED ABOVE ALL OTHERS. SON’S FATHER IS HIS GOD. WILL
RULE ON HIS OWN THRONE IN THIS EARTH.

Remember, all this is in comparison to the angels. They are powerful ministering spirits,
but the Son is way above them.

1:6 (Last part) Let all the angels worship the Son.

2
CHAPTER 2.

2:1. THEREFORE - based on all that has been said. Take heed. Beware.

2:2. If the Word of (and to angels) did not fail and they were punished for disobedience.

2:3. How shall we escape if we neglect?

2:5. It is not angels who will rule the world to come.

2:6. It is MAN. Ps 8:4.

2:7 (First part) Man was made a little lower than the angels.]

GOD
SON
ANGELS
MAN
The word angels in this text is from Ps 8:5. And in the Hebrew the word is ‘elohim’.
However, it is not correct to translate it that he is a little lower than God. Elohim can be
translated God, god, goddess, ruler, angel. – all leaders in their category. Paul translates
Hebrews as angels. Sr White quotes Paul as he wrote. The Masoretic English Bible says
angels, so we can be sure it is angels.
It is also possible that Adam was superior to us as we are in sin. He was to be the
representative of our earth and attend the meetings in heaven. How would he get there?
Possibly he would have been able, but in sin he could not.

2:8. Ps 8:6. Once had dominion, but lost it.

2:9. BUT WE SEE JESUS – wonderful words. In a world of sin, with fear of man, fear of
wild animals, fear of death – we see Jesus, the One we have been seeing is so much higher
than us and even of the angels. Note, Jesus took humanity, BELOW the angels.

GOD
SON
ANGELS
MAN – JESUS

Jesus took humanity after 4000 years of sin – shorter, weaker, smaller brain, inherited tendencies.

2:16. He took not the nature of angels. He took flesh and blood.

2:14.15. All things made by His and for Him, but He took our nature to bring salvation.

2:11. Christ sanctifies us. We are sanctified by Him through His Spirit and the Word.
Therefore we are one with Him. John 17:17-21.

2:11.12. Christ declares publicly that He is not ashamed to call us His brethren.
Who are his brethren? DA638. Sons of Adam, but especially sanctified sons. This
is why the texts says (v16) seed of Abraham. Adam represents sin, but Abraham
represents faith.

3
2:13. He is not ashamed to say He is our Elder Brother. Are we ashamed of Him? He is willing
to declare it – Are we? His children given from Father. John 17:6. Isa 9:6.

2:17. WHEREFORE He was made like us so He could be a faithful high priest – for us, the
sanctified ones.

2:10. Made perfect through suffering and temptation. Built His human character in this world.

2:18. Therefore He is able to succour us in our temptation.

Summarise all again:

Phil 2:5-11.

Praise God We do have a great high priest.
