A lot of news + about 250 objective reviewsIs been quite a while ago since you heard from us. #10 came out i AugustiSeplember 1999 and ifs January 2001 now. And I can
‘easly explain why it took s0 long. After #10 had been released I moved on my own, and I took my time to get setied and to get
‘everything done properly. In early 2000 I started to work on this new issue, doing interviews and reviews on the items Thad got
Meanwhile Theo did his share as wel, but since I am responsable for the release ofthis issue his part got delayed too. A few months
later in early speing I quit for a while since there were so many other things I had to do or simply wanted to do. T continued in late
‘summer and since then T spent an awful lot of my free time on this issue. Also included are 2 interviews which are made by Ron,
one of the editors of Vampire ‘zine. His help for tis issue is highly appreciated. Martin's involvement is limited to @ hand ful of
reviews. If I look at this issue now I am satisfied with how it tumed out. And yes, you can complain about certain interviews and
reviews being quite old (which they are!) but you must remember that the main reason for doing ths ‘zine is to spread the names of
the bands, not the latest details about the bunds (although we try to put as much information in it as we can). Sill I hope you'll enjoy
this issue. And if not, you can always use it as tiletpaper, ha! Anyway, included are a lot of great bands which deserve your
attention. Support them, support the labels, distributors and other ‘ines too. Together we keep this scene going. Take care!!! (Ewald)

responsable for 3 full lenght CD's, 1 mini CD,
2 EPs, and a huge beer consumption. They've
been doing their share of black meta! for about
10 years now and its about time that they get
the recognitioa they deserve. Ewald did the
following interview which is answered by
Decayed guitarist Jose
Its February the 26th, 11 a.m,, and Tm
listening to Brazilian Deadenocracy while
having a good cup of coffee. How do you do?
‘Portugal must bein the grip of spring now?
Helish greetings Ewald! The 22th of March,
19.39 pan., and T'm listening to the demos of
Vader on picture LP. A good release if it was
done properly. tm doing ok, not great but ok.
Things could be beter about Decayed, but
time will tell how everything will be sorted out.
Right now we are in the grip of autunn or
some shit tke that. It has been raining all day
and the God of Thunder has been hammering
the earth, Arent we living in some fucked up
era?
“Your debut CD "The conjuration of the
southem circle” (which was released in early
'94) shouldve been re-released on Nazzul's
Eerie Records including 4 cover songs as &
bonus. It looks to me lke it never happened.
‘Youre correct, it never happened. We've
been having bad shit coming our way
throughout our existence. Luck is a word that
can not be associated with Decayed. We are
the bastard sons of metal! Nezxuls Eerie was
‘one of the labels that was doomed to vanish,
mainly because of the bad quality releases
sometimes mistaken as underground. One can
be underground and still release quality
albums.
“Time for a change, lsening to Candlemass
now. Where was I? You must be tired of all
the delays and cancellations. Your new CD
‘The book of darkness" was delayed for 248
‘years, Evil Omen Records should release it,
bout they got bankrupt. After all Drakkar
Records released it. But stil the LP version
seems uncertain, Maybe you should change
‘your name into Delayed?
‘Yeah, great idea, Delayed shall be our name.
Tt seems that labeis have @ good way to delay
‘our releases since all our label releases got
delayed. Not to mention that younger bands
already have 4 o¢ 5 albums and we just
released the 3rd album. We should be
releasing the 7th Decayed album in 2000, not
the 4th, Atleast we want to release it this year.
‘As for the LP version, I dont think that there
will be any. Although we would love to see
cour music on LP format. there isnt anyone
doing it It's already too hard to find a label for
our CD's.
‘Do you feel confident now that its finally
‘out or do you maybe feel kinds dissatisfied
Since it took so ong, and thatthe allure isout-
dated already?
Tm not sure of what feel towards this "new"
album, Ithas been ready since October ‘97 s0
to me itisnt & new album. Its just a Decayed
album which shows how we were in'97, not
1s we are now. We thought about re-tecording
the album, but then we thought tha this alburn
is a part of our history and thus it should be
released. I don' think tat is outdated ‘cause it
stil sounds like no one else. It doesnt sound
like something you've heard before, right?
‘Ok, some days have passed, its March the
2nd now, 2 o'clock inthe aftersood, and I just
{got back from the past office. Some years ago
‘you had the chance to sign with Adipocere or
Osmose Records. Instead of that you did your
"Seven seals” EP for Dack Records. Did you
regret it that you didnt sign with any of ‘em
now that you've had so much obsticals?
Maybe Decayed wouldve been 2 lot bigger if
‘you were on Osmase? But perhaps thal 's not
What you want either?
‘The 24th of March. You got that wrong, we
never had the chance to sign for any of these
labels you mentioned. They were never
interested in Decayed! Sorry for that. 1 got this
info out of a Portugal scene report from about
5-6 years ago. Tm sure that we would be
bigger if we had signed with Osmose and
believe me that we would like to be bigger and
sell more copies of our albums. I'm sure that it
‘must feel great to sell 10.000 copies of each
release, to have promotion for your albums
and to see them available everywhere. Its
very frustrating to put a lot of my time into this
band and then get no recognition and no help
from the labels.
In your exrly days you had a real drummer.
But for quize 4 long time you depend on a
drumcomputer. It looks to ite that it was fist
used on the "Resurrectionem mortuorurn” CD.
Finding a good drummer hes always been
difficult for you. Will you go on as a tinity,
with a drimcomputer instead of & real
ceumplayer?
Yeah, we had several drummers from 1990-
1998, but then I decided that I wanted to push
this band forward and bought « drummachine
‘The best thing I ever didt We would prefer to
have a real druminer, we like to improvise &
Jot on stage, and with @ drumcomputer that just
isnt possible. But we could only accept a
drummer who could play our material as we
want it, There are too many bands that are
fucked up due to incompetent drummers, and
we dont want to be ane more. How many
times have you heard a great riff ruined by a
stupid drum beet? We need a real drummer,
‘ot Someane who claims to play.
Before I start the next question TM put some
music on. The new Nethermancy demo,
surprise hey? Your “In tustull mayher” min
CD was like a black page in your existence.
You dida' like the album and after listening to
it T understand why. Have you ever felt the
need to re-record the songs from that album
(except forthe song “Thy summoning’, which
features on the "Resurrectionem..." CD)? Are
‘you satistied with the other things you did so
far, for example the "Thus revealed” demo
which dates back to 1992?
Tm not that surprised that you lsten to the
Nethermancy demo ‘cause I sent you a copy
to be reviewed in the might M.O.B. Have you
done the review by now? Yes, I did it a preny
Jong time ago, among the other releases of
other bands which youre involved in Cool shit
if you ask me, very cold! It's obvious that we
would like to re-record all the songs that
feature on the mini CD ‘cause the only thing
that we dont lke isthe fucked up sound. The
songs are great and thats why we re-recorded
"Thy summoning” on our 2nd album, and the
2 covers on our Sed. We also re-recorded the
title song for a cassette EP but the label didnt
‘manage to put it out. Tm not sure of what will
hhappen with that material. Maybe well look
for another label, anyone interested? We are
song to re-record the 2 keyboard tracks on
ur 4th album. As you can see we are siowly
re-recording the whole mini CD. As you know
from other interviews you did, no band is ever
satisfied with the final result in any release. Its
always "now we see that some things could be
improved", and the same happens to
Decayed. The demo is another example, but it
was the first time that we were ina studio, andwe had no idea of how to get # metal sound
with all those machines, and the engineer
it help. It shouldve been a very different
demo, more VENOMish
‘Does it happen that you won't use songs
and drop them, whatever the reasoa may be? I
ask this ‘cause I read in an old interview that
‘you had new songs like "Shall ascend” and
"immortal’s entreaty”, but T've never seen or
seat hese songs. Fetaps on your debut CD?
we never dropped a song but can throw
evihigesy i. tat OF vony aang ear
sounds lite @ good Decayed song. When we
start working on a song the only thing that
matters is if it sounds hike Decayed. Some
parts may be changed but others remain and
thus the songs are never thrown away. The
songs you mentioned are included on our
debut album and if you don't know that one I
have t9 send itto you on tape. You'l be blown,
away.
Monday, March the 6th, and Tm just back
from doing some shopping. Hi, Im back,
whats up mate? You've done several cover
songs too, songs from Sodom, Slayer, Venom.
Your fave band is Bathory, ever done a cover
from them or maybe have plans to do one?
‘Sunday, April the Sth. Good to see that you're
back! Actually nothing's up, just rehearsing
and composing the final songs for our 4th
album. Sony to disappoint you Ewald but my
fave band is not Venom. I guess that everyone
knew by now that Tm totally devoted to the
legions of Venom. But yes, we have done a
cover of Bathory ("
the split CD with Alastor and 2 more on the
new album ("Call from the grave” and “The
retum of darkness end evil"). Besides these
vee aso played "Woman of dark desires” and
anthorn” live i the past.
Decayed also did « split CD with Alastor
which I bought from you, but you also sold
demas ftom Thhgnor, HOTH, Nethermancy.
‘might be wrong but are you. or any of the
other Decayed members involved in any of
these bands?
Youre right, I play in all these bands, and
some more actually. Music is my life and I
love to play all sorts of metal music. If Thad
‘more time and mare money 1 would play in
more bands. Since I dont lke to mix different
styles Thave to put all my ideas into different
projects.
Flow many Sagres (which is Portuguese
beer) did you drink before you came up with
such an awiu! suprise bonus song at the ead
Of the split CD?
ages is the best fucking beer in the
‘universe. Awful surprise bonus? Why do you
‘say that its awful? I think that its very
beautiful, so lovely! I would have liked to see
‘Your face when you wrote this man! And we
didn't drink any beer when we recorded that
piece of art. We were just having fun with
some friends, fucking around. If's me on
guitars, VJ on bass, Destructor on drums and
Jorge (Cunnilingus vocalist) on vocals.
Avfier 10 years, 5 CD releases and 2 EP's
Decayed is still a rather smail and unknown
band. Ofcourse we can blame the trendy
black metal kids for it. After all youre not
from Norway. But don't you tink that the
whole Portuguese scene fas been boycotted
for many years?
‘The Poriuguese scene has been ignored over
the years due to 2 factors, 1 think. 1) Most
Portuguese bands dont bother to spread their
‘name and music outside our national borders.
Most bands are happy by just being known by
their friends and act like rockstars. 2) Portugal
is in the far end of Europe and people arent
interested in what happens in unknown
countries. They're just interested in what goes
around in the “in’ countries. Its all about
trends and lazyness to search for something
different and unknown.
“Would it make a differeace if Portugal
was a central or west European country andlor
Portugal had. lets say 20 black metal bands?
Would it make a difference if there were
‘more Portuguese ‘zines and labels operating &
lot outside Portugal?
Mast of what you say would make a
difference, Tm sure of that. I we were in the
centre of Europe we would have more
atention from the scene and we would have
more chances to have bands playing and go
play in other countries. We do have more than
20 black metal bands but they all follow trends
and therefore achieve nothing. As for labels.
and ‘Zines, its all again due to the fact that
were in the end of Europe, very far away
from everything. except for Spain, and this
fucking country is of no use ‘cause they're only
interested in Spanish products. We are a smalt
‘country that can only count with itself.
“AL good source of information’ for this
interview were some old ‘zines. Strange thieg
was that they were all from Europe. How's
Decayed's popularity today?
{think that we are known everywhere, from
America to Singapore. but its obvious tha the
biggest part comes from Europe. At least we
get mail from everywhere. Its @ fact that we
arent very popular, but our name is known
‘everywhere, I like to think that ifs due to our
‘own sound, our brand of black metal. But 1
hhave to admit that we have a very loyal group
of ftiends/suppocters which spread our name
everywhere. It feels great when I contact a
bband and they go “I just finished listening to
‘your album, and its cool stuff". We know that
‘we are worid spread. The problem is that its
‘ot cool to say that one listens to our musi
New CD, other recordlabel. Maybe this
will pen doors for you. It fooks tome that you
have played in your bome country only, or
‘pethaps in Spain. Is Drakkar able to arrange
‘some gigs for you in Europe. Do you fee! the
need to do gigs elsewhere in Europe, or
maybe only to taste some beers besides
Sagres?
‘Yeeh, new album, new label, it seems that
wwe never release 2 albus on the same label
although we hope that Drakkar will be our last
label. Tm very tired of looking for honest and
serious labels. Maybe the fact that Drakkar is,
from France will help us to spread our name
and music. Tf’s true, we only played in
Portugal. ‘Drakkar was working with
Metalysee for a European tour, but it all felt
through and it seems that Metalysee is no
longer « honest institution so Drakkar is trying
WE ARE THE BASTARD SONS OF METAL!—Decayed
to pula tour together by their own, We want
to play everywhere ‘cause we love to play
live, it just feels great and it would be very
interesting to see the reactions of other
crowds to Decayed, see if they would go
crazy, see if they would bang those foreign
hheads ill they break their necks. Not to
mention that we have a drummachine and
‘some people have problems with that. No
longer here in Portugal. As for tasting other
beers that may be a problem ‘cause Sagres is
so fucking great that it is very hard for a
Sagres maniac to taste other inferior beers.
Stark Bock from Sweden is great!
‘Evvery time I see a picture of Decayed, I
see some headbangers who seemingly have
4 good time and enjoy the things they are
doing. Totaly different from the “evillooking-
corpsepaintedwocshippersofdarkness" that
normally feature on an EP/demofCD cover.
What does Decayed mean to you, and metal
‘music in general? Do you see it as a bobby or
‘has it become your way of lie?
‘Oh man, shit! What does Decayed and
hours? This isthe sor of tak that I only have
with friends and if possible over a few beers.
‘This band and metal music are my biggest
passions in life, they make me get out of bed
Jn the morning. They are the only 2 things for
which. is worth being alive, although

When Robbert of Pyaemia mailed this intie
to Theo he apologised for the fact that it took
some time to answer it, and he hoped that it
wasn't too late to be featured in this issue.
An awful lot of time has passed since then
and meanwhile certain things that were said
in this intie had changedso we had to change
the intie a bit. Still I hope you like the
conversation between Robbert and ‘Theo.
“Leil us something about the very beginning
of Pyaemia. When did i all start, and who
was it to make his mind up to start Pyremia?
What has influenced you?
Pyaemia stared as an idea by Frank (bass)
‘and Anton who were on the same highschool
tas me (Robbert, drums). On our highschool
we fad an anual event at which students
perform in front of 400 students and parents,
We decided it was time somebody kicked
some major ass over there, 80 together with
Joe! (vocals, now also guitars), who 1 know
since principal school, and another guy from
‘our class we did 2 death metal songs over
there. It was a big success, after the first song
only 20 people were left, plus 15 of our
friends moshing all over the stage. After this
success we were ofcourse thirsty for more.
‘Joel took over the guitars from our classmate
and we continued playing covers from bands
like Suffocation. Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy,
Cryptopsy, and others. These are also some
of our biggest influences.
‘When did you record the "Cranial
blowout” mini CD? Tell us more about the
recording. Its self released, isnt?
We recorded this mini CD in October'98 at
f studio called "Het Pand” in the city of
Vinardingen. It took 2 days for recording and
one day for the mix, Indeed its self released.
We're not 100% satisfied about the sound. It
should be re-released on Repulse Records but
that didn't happen.
low many songs are on that disc and how
many copies did you sell? Is it stil available?
How do you analyse the Iyrics? Did you guys
ever release 2 demo before the mini CD?
‘There are 5 (what we like to believe) ultra
brutal songs on "Cranial blowout". T have
absolutely no idea how many copies have
been sold. At least by far not as many as we
could have because when we signed with
Repulse we promised them that we wouldat
distribute the mini CD on a large scale. We
used a lot of them for promotion and sold the
rest at shows or we sold them to dedicated
sickos. The lyrics are written by Joel and
Frank. They are about torture and death, you
know, the usual stuff. I can't tell you much
about how they analyse them, I dont know.
But Joel always puts them in songs the way I
can really appreciate. One year before
"Cranial blowout” we recorded 2 songs that
are also on the mini CD, but other than that
‘We havent recorded anything.
‘After the release of "Cranial blowout"
Pyaemia signed with Repulse Records. Were
there any other labels interested?
‘We got a prety good contract with Repulse
with a nice budget, but after all noting
hhappened and we leit them. We're now on
Unique Leader Records. Before Repulse we
were negotiating with Displeased Records
and with Mike van Mastrigt (former Sinister]
Houwitser vocalist), but at that ime Repulse
just had the best deal
‘So, youte doing « new album. Can you tell
sme more about it and when will it be out?
‘The new album is recorded in the "Excess"
studio in Rotterdam. Besides the 5 songs from
the "Cranial blowout" mini CD itll contain 4
or 5 new ones. We played some of these new
cones at our shows and got some really good
reactions. I think theyll definitely blow you
away. Other than that I cant tell you much
about it except that it must be out in fell 2000.
Axe there any musical differences
Between the mini CD and the new allum.
What are your expectations towards the new
album?
‘There arent any big differences, just details
that make a couple of the songs more brutal
than the older ones. They stil blast, tha’s for
sure, About our expeciations, we want
better sound. With the recording of "Cranial
blowout" we didnt take much time to get the
perfect guitarsound before we started
recording. We thought we would just do that
when we were mixing. That didnt really
work out, the 2 guitars have a very different
sound and its « bit of a sloppy sound. ‘This
time we've spent much more time in
adjusting our amps. Also we got more time
for recording and also for mixing, I's the
‘most important thing for us, to deliver a
brutal, tight and well produced CD. Then lets
hope itl sell
“What can you tell our readers aboutNocturnal Silence, the other band youre
involved in? Releases? Members? What led
toe vein o is be?
NNoctumal Silence is another brutal death
‘metal band Joel and I play in. Dont led the
name mislead you, it started out some 7 years
ago as a very melodic death metal band, but
since I replaced their od drummer and Joe!
‘took over from the leaving lead guitar player
3 years ago their music has become more
‘ual and brutal In their old line-up (which
‘was: Robbert Kok - vocals, Gerben vid Bij -
sites, Dorus Neiboer - lead guitars, Nils
‘Berdsen - bass, Maarten Winnips - drums)
they alteady recorded 2 demos (the last one
with Joel as second guitaris). With the new
line-up we recorded # 7-song CD “Plateau* in
June 98, but we never really released it due
to weird circumstances. Now we have just
recorded a new 3-song promo "Point of few"
that just needs ‘some mixing. Its really a
‘bul piece of work. Check some samples
cut on our homepage.
“Tell us more about the Pyaemia gigs.
Have you done many shows? Which bands
‘id you play with and what was the most
interesting band t play with?
would like to advise everyone out there to
check out our gigs. Theyre brutal as fuck!
We have been playing shows since the
begiming of Pyacmia in auturan 1995, s0
thats a while. But we haven't dane thet many
shows yet, maybe 25, 30 or something.
Lately itis going better, we are hooking up
ih other bands and fans that spread the
‘word about Pyaemia, and manage shows for
‘us (ig thanks to you all, especially the guy
in Severe Torture!). So we are playing more
lay. Check out our homepage frequently
for upcoming shows! I think the most
interesting band we have played with lately
vas Severe Tormre, because theyre into
the same music as we are and play the same
kind of style. We havenit played with “big”
foreign bands yet.
‘im seriously impressed by the talented
death metal (and some black metal) bands in
Holland. We have Cennian, Severe Torture,
Inhume, Occul, to mention a few. Whats
‘your opinion about the Dutch scene? And
‘What's your opinion concering the worldwide
scene? How gay is black metal for you?
Tm pretty impressed too! Back is my early
eath metal days I only knew Sinister as a
brutal Dutch death metal band. Nowadeys
brutal Dutch death metal bands just keep
popping up, playing the American style of
brutal deatb metal. Lets hope it will continue.
‘Also in the global scene I'm discovering new
cool bands frequently. It's probably because
Tm getting sucked into it deeper than ever. 1
‘can only appreciate black metal when its
extreme but sill tight as hell, something lke
Dark Funeral. Other than that black metal
cant, really intrest me. All the
painting and flame spiting, that's just sad.
Do you have any other interests or
‘Passions apart from pleying death metal?
‘Who doesn't (smoke blunts and sip beer)?
But death metal is my biggest passion right
‘now, and it will probably continue to be 30 for
awhile.
im sure that all will go great with Pyaemia
and we will help to spread your name for
sure, Any last words?
‘Theo, hanks for the interview and for your
support. All you sick fuckers out there, just
beck us out. Til then.
Robbert recently told me that their album on
Unique Records can come out any moment and
is entitled "Cerebral cereal".
Write him for info.

of Sectarian had to discuss.
I know its fuckin’ bore but please, give us
‘your biography. Were the band members jn
other bands before Sectarian and were there
any line-up changes? The previous band
name was Kickshaw, why did you rename
the band and why Sectarian?
Yes, there were some line-up changes
before the line-up we form now. First, we
started out in the summer of 95 with Kevin
firing Bart Alders (guitar), Ramon Bochman
(drums) and Jeroen Gelissen (bass). We tried
‘some vocalists behind the mike but that didnt
‘work out. After a while Ramon moved to
America for a year so we've had Bjom
Prevaas (drums) to help us out fora gig. But
he didet have the time and interest to keep
playing with us. Thats when Rick Bouwman
(drums) joined the band. And we started to
make our own songs and did less covers.
‘We've played a few gigs without vocals but
that didat work out that well. The response
was ok but something was missing, Late ‘98
‘we started to look again for vocal support and
Pascal Beastings joined Kickshaw and the
line-up was completed. Until a year ago we
did some gigs under the name of Kickshaw
