ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

EXAMINE THE STOCK MARKET DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN


ONE OF THE FOLLOWING COUNTRIES:

1. MALAYSIA
2. INDONESIA
3. THAILAND
4. CHINA
5. AUSTRALIA
6. NEWZEALAND
7. HONGKHONG
8. SINGAPORE
9. THE U.K.
10. THE U.S.
11. GERMANY

ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES

1. The above list of 11 countries are corresponding to the group numbers given to
you in the class.

2. Your assignment should consist of the following parts:

Part I: Introduction: (maximum 2 pages)

In this section, please briefly provide the history of the chosen countrys stock market
development as well as its economic growth.

Part II: Empirical Study

In this section, you need to provide details of the following:


a. Data: annual GDP, Population, annual stock market capitalization, total
value of share traded per annum. You may obtain the above data from the
countrys statistic office, World Bank or IMF report, data stream.

b. Study period: by 2015 (covering all historical data).

c. Method of testing:

- Pearson Correlation test for GDP/capital and stock market


capitalization, GDP/capital and total value of share traded per
annum.
- Please run the test and report all the results using Eview software
or SPSS.

Part IV: Analysis of Finings (the more detailed the better)

In this section, you need to interpret the findings (results):

- Report your test results


- Are they significant?
- If yes, what does it mean?

Part V: Conclusion

Please summarize the study and provide your view over the findings.

3. To submit your assignment, you need to submit the following:

(i) 1 soft copy and 1 hard copy of your assignment


(ii) 1 soft copy of data file (raw data) with referenced sources, i.e. World Bank,
IMF, national bank, statistic office of Malaysia/ Indonesia/..
(iii) 1 soft copy of test results
(iv) 1 soft copy and 1 hard copy of your power point slides

All softcopies should be stored in a CD attached with your hard copies. All the above
need to be submitted to me before your presentation scheduled during two lecture classes
in week 7. No late submission is accepted.
