Abstract
Social change can be a gradual unfolding of different ways of life or can imply a sudden,
fundamental transformation of economic, social, and political institu- tions, as was the
case in Eastern Europe after the end of the Cold War. Individuals perceive, experience, and
handle effects of social change on the basis of certain sociopsychological processes. This
chapter focuses on how individuals deal with social change - how social change is
perceived, experienced, and acted upon by the person and how these reactions affect
human development. Until recently, social change and individual development were
studied separately in different disciplines. Attempting to relate these two complex topics
of research may increase the risk of failing to deal successfully with either one. However, I
believe that the study of individual development in a changing socioeconomic context will
allow us to further our understanding of human development. This belief is based on the
assumption that individual development is an active process taking place over the life
course in multiple contexts. The active role of the individual is seen in the psychological
processes of negotiating the self in relation to the environment, including goal setting,
decision making, and behavior. The contextual view enlarges the individual-centered
approach by specifying ecological conditions that affect individual development and by
illuminating multidirectional processes in changing person-environment relations. When
dealing with the possible effects of social change on individual development, several
issues have to be claried: I. Which aspects of social change have an impact on the
individual person? 2. How is the individual person affected by such factors? 3. Why do
some people gain from social change and others experience losses? 4. How does the
outcome of social change affect further individual development? From a theoretical
perspective, the questions are, Can the view of development as an active, life-long process-
in-context further our understanding of individual Parts of this research were supported by

Mixed Methods Perspective
In the present study, perception of a greater or lesser power

of the country has a similar effect for more positive or
negative predictions for its future. As models of
development under social changes emphasized (Pinquart &
Silbereisen , 2004; Trommsdorff, 2000), distant changes
affect individual through more proximal systems, which can
provide resources for dealing with these changes. Individual
perception of the present of the country is another
characteristic of the perceived macro-context that
signicantly adds to individual view of the future.

The relationships between perceived stress for the future and coping
strategies in times of social uncertainty: A study of Italian adolescents
Several studies have found that adolescents' most stressful

concerns are more often related to the future domain than to
other domains, such as relationships with parents and peers
and even school achievement (Nurmi et al., 1995; Seiffge-
Krenke, 1995; Frydenberg, 1997; Frydenberg, Lewis et al.,
2001). Although uncertainty and social change are pervasive
in all of western society, they may differ between countries
and also within the same country, based on specic
sociological conditions, such as the rate of unemployment
(Crockett and Silbereisen, 2000; Pinquart and Silbereisen,
2004; Trommsdorff, 2000 ). Some recent studies have
shown that, although the level of future-related stress is
generally high, there are differences in stress across
different European countries (Gelhaar et al., 2007; Seiffge-
Krenke et al., 2008): in some countries, such as Germany and
Great Britain, the level is lower than in other countries, like
France and Italy.

Changes in Psychological Distress among East German Adolescents Facing
German Unification The Role of Commitment to the Old System and of Self-
Efficacy Beliefs
More concretely, among adolescents with low levels of self-

efcacy we found that a stronger identication with the GDR
system was associated with an increase in psychological
distress, whereas no such effect was observed in
adolescents with average and high self-efcacy. It has been
suggested that high self-efcacy may help an individual to
cope with social change (Diewald, 2000; Sydow et al., 1999;
Trommsdorff, 2000 ), for example , because self-efcacy
beliefs are associated with higher success expectations,
higher motivation to master new challenges, and active
coping (Bandura, 1995Bandura, , 1997). In addition, our
results indicate that average self-efcacy beliefs were strong
enough to buffer the effect of a strong identication with the
previous political system on psychological distress.
