Unit:Colorism in the Americas.

This text set supports our unit on Afro-Latinos and satisfies the culture, connections and

culture components of the world language standards. Teaching this unit helps create

more conscious students. The textbook is only used to reference maps and provide

phrases that students should use in class discussions like Estoy de acuerdo con Joziah

porque as students are taught to use Spanish when they can. As noted in Best

Practices readers need to encounter both windows and mirrors[with] window-books

they can look through, discovering whole other worlds, times, places, peoples, struggles

and events and mirror-books provide characters and situations that reflect students

real lives. (Zemelman, p 103). The texts used in this unit expose students to people

and cultures that mirror their own people and culture in many ways. This in ways forces

a conceptual change or shift in student beliefs and knowledge of a people. The unit

addresses misconceptions and begins a pathway to knowledge and self-awareness.
