Directions: Down below are a series of questions that I have asked a former Navy

men to answer over our interview over the phone.

1. What is your name and how long did you serve in the Navy?
My name is John Johnson Jr. and I have served in the Navy for a total of 10 years. For my first
contract I served for 4 years and for my second contract I served for another 6 years.
2. What was your job description in the Navy?
I was a Boatswains Mate known to be the most versatile member of the Coast Guard's
operational team, and a master of seamanship.
3. How was the Atmosphere both onboard and offboard?
Onboard just felt like I was in college but when I was import (offboard) it felt like I was
apart of the world again.
4.At most how long would you be onboard and offboard?
Once you are deployed at most you would be onboard for 6-9 months with breaks in
between if you are lucky. However for me I was onboard for 4 months straight before I
could even touch land.
5. Did anything devastating happen while you were in the Navy?If so, How did it
impact you?
I have seen people legs get chopped off, Ive seen someone fall off board from the top
of the ship. By me seeing that I had to learn how to overcome my emotions.
6. Knowing what you know now what would you have done differently?
I would have took advantage of the U.S education system I would have been more
valuable to the community upon discharge.
7. What advice would you give anyone deciding to join the Navy?
I would tell them to take advantage of your opportunity while you can and its okay to be
out of your comfort zone.
8. What made you join the military branch of the Navy?
I wanted to be able to travel the world. I didnt want to be stuck in one place at a time.
9. Are you currently in the Navy? If so, how were you discharged? And why?
No I am currently not in the military. I was honorably discharged because my reason for
leaving was that my second contract was up. I wanted to be in my sons life to see him
grow up to become a better man than I was.
