ASSIGNMENT # 2 REFUGEE CASE

STUDY
AP/PPAS 3190 B - Public Administration
Professor Klassen
Submitted by: Meredith Hatton # 212963278
Citizenship, Refugees and Immigration Canada

Issue:
Eight ships of refugees are heading to Canada on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and Canada
needs to decide if they will allow them to make refugee status in Canada.

Background:
Canada has accepted refugees in the past with its current policies. Now there is a mixed public opinion
on the current immigration policy with one side okay with it and the other calling for it to be tightened.

Option 1 Accept the refugees into Canada, as done so in the past remaining at status quo on this
immigration policy.

Pros
Canadas policy has worked well in the past.

Many lives will be saved if the current policy remains in place and refugees are allowed to
claim status.

Cons
Due to current public opinion accepting more refugees could result in a negative backlash in
communities.

Canada could look like a weak entry point for people who may not be refugees.

Option 2 Update immigration policy in regards to acceptance of refugees and ensure

that public is aware of the new stringent process.

Pro
Canada will still be saving many people from serious situations that had them leave their
country of origin.

New public policy regarding refugee status will be well received with interest groups and
organizations that had called for it.

Con
Putting a new policy in place will be a timely process and will put the refugees in limbo
until determined.

It could look like Canada is putting a new policy in place to target a specific country to

deter them from coming to Canada.

Option 3 Refuse entry of the refugees into Canada.

Pro
Canada will not be faced with any financial burden from accepting refugees.

Due to unknown medical or criminal background of potential refugees, Canada could avoid
future impact medical supports or criminality.

Con
By Canada not standing behind its policy on immigration is sends a negative message on
democracy in Canada.

Many lives will be put at risk by refusing entry into Canada.

Recommendation:

Due to the time sensitivity of the refugees due to be landing on each coast, and lives
being at risk, Canada should remain with status quo with immigration policy.
