Iwasaweeboy,inthethirdgrade.Ihadrecentlybeengivenababychickenasagiftfromsomeclose

friendsofmine.Thechickenwasmine,andIwasthechickens.Weestablishedalovingrelationship,growing

closerandcloser,daybyday.Ourbondwasspecial,andthepeoplearoundmedidntunderstandit.Ibeganto

spendeverymomentofthedaywithmychicken,whoInamedChicky.IwouldtakeChickyonwalksaround

thepark,andtakehimaroundtheschool,introducinghimtomypeers.Peoplewouldquestionme.Whydo

youbringyourchickentoschool?Itunedthatnoiseout.Thathatecouldntgettome.Theydidntunderstand

theconnectionwehad.
Sadly,asanyrelationshipgrows,conflictbegintoarise.Chickydevelopedacannibalisticproblem,

eatingtheeggsonmyplateinthemorning.Hebecamequiet,speakingtomeless,asifhewashiding

something.Ourwalkshappenedlessfrequently,andhenolongerhadaninterestincomingwithmetoschool.

Igrewparanoid,worriedaboutwhathappenedbetweenus.DidIdosomethingwrong?WasitsomethingI

said?Theconfusiontookoverme,followedbyawaveofhopelessness.Itriedtoamenourbroken

relationship,believingthatitcouldberestored.
NowthatIlookback,IseehowfoolishIwas.ItwasaSaturdaymorning,apeacefulbreezeflowing

throughthetrees.Chickywaswatchingthemorningcartoons,andIwalkeduptohim,placinghimonmylap,

tryingtoenjoyhispresence.Chickybecameagitatedandusedmypajamasasarestroom,muchtomy

displeasure.Iputhimuponthecouchandtookamomenttocleanmypajamas.Afterreturningfromthe

restroom,IwasstruckwithhorrorwhenIreturned.OnmycouchlaidChickywithapillowuponhisneck.

Stormingacrosstheroom,IthrewthepillowasideandheldChickyinmyarmsashereleasedafinalchirp

withhisdyingbreath.TearscamedownmycheeksandIcollapsed.Mybodywasnumb,motionlessonthe

ground.AfterlosingChicky,IpromisedIwouldneveropenmyhearttoloveanyoneoranythingelseever

again.
