Overtime,corrosivesoilswithhighmoistureandsaltcontentandhightemperaturescandegradegroundrodsandtheir
connections.So,althoughthegroundsystemhadlowearthgroundresistancevalueswheninitiallyinstalled,the
resistanceofthegroundingsystemcanincreaseifthegroundrodsarecorroded.
Groundingtestersareindispensabletroubleshootingtoolstohelpyoumaintainuptime.Itisrecommendedthatall

Whatisaground?
TheUSNationalElectricalCode(NEC)Article100definesagroundas:aconductingconnection,whetherintentionalor
accidental,betweenanelectricalcircuitorequipmentandtheearth,ortosomeconductingbodythatservesinplaceof

Whataffectsthegroundingresistance?
Fourvariablesaffectthegroundresistanceofagroundsystem:lengthordepthofthegroundelectrodethediameterof
thegroundelectrodethenumberofgroundelectrodesandgroundsystemdesign.
Length/depthofthegroundelectrode
Drivinggroundelectrodesdeeperisaveryeffectivewaytolowergroundresistance.Soilisnotconsistentinits

lengthofthegroundelectrode.Itissometimesimpossibletodrivegroundrodsdeeperinareascomposedofrock,for

Diameterofthegroundelectrode
Increasingthediameterofthegroundelectrodehasverylittleeffectinloweringtheresistance.Forexample,youcould
doublethediameterofagroundelectrodeandyourresistancewouldonlydecreaseby10%.

Usingmultiplegroundelectrodesprovidesanotherwaytolowergroundresistance.Morethanoneelectrodeisdriveninto
