Overtime,corrosivesoilswithhighmoistureandsaltcontentandhightemperaturescandegradegroundrodsandtheir

Whatisaground?

TheUSNationalElectricalCode(NEC)Article100definesagroundas:aconductingconnection,whetherintentionalor

Whataffectsthegroundingresistance?

Fourvariablesaffectthegroundresistanceofagroundsystem:lengthordepthofthegroundelectrodethediameterof
thegroundelectrodethenumberofgroundelectrodesandgroundsystemdesign.

Length/depthofthegroundelectrode

Drivinggroundelectrodesdeeperisaveryeffectivewaytolowergroundresistance.Soilisnotconsistentinits

lengthofthegroundelectrode.Itissometimesimpossibletodrivegroundrodsdeeperinareascomposedofrock,for

Diameterofthegroundelectrode

Increasingthediameterofthegroundelectrodehasverylittleeffectinloweringtheresistance.Forexample,youcould
doublethediameterofagroundelectrodeandyourresistancewouldonlydecreaseby10%.
