A Very Short Introduction to

Comics
Comics- A narrative constructed using pictures and words in
temporal sequence.

Another definition- A narrative in which words and pictures have


'equal rights'.

'Comics' are also known as 'Bande Dessine' in France and 'Manga' in


Japan.
Difference between 'comics' and 'illustrated book'-- Only in comics is
TIME indicated through the relation between pictures. 'Time indication'
is one of the unique aspects of comics.

A person who creates comics is referred to as a 'comics author',


'comics artist', or simply writer/artist.
Japan is the world's largest producer and consumer of comics.

PUNCH the British humour
magazine begun in 1841 was very
influential in popularizing the satirical
cartoon around the world.

Cartoon- Originally referred to a


drawing made in preparation for the
final painting, in European art.

Today, a 'cartoon' is usually a single


panel humorous drawing published in
newspapers.
It also refers to animation films.
A person who draws cartoons is
referred to as a 'cartoonist'.
This 1843 illustration is the first modern usage of the word
'Cartoon', to mean satirical drawing.
Inspired by Punch, humour magazines
filled with cartoons began to appear
elsewhere.

In India, the Urdu language Oudh Punch


was first published in 1877, from
Lucknow.
The Yellow Kid (1894-95), published in the American newspaper New York
Journal, was one of the earliest comic strips using a recurring character.
Newspaper comic strips in
America became more
sophisticated and started using full
colour in the 1900s-20s.
