2.3 Alternative Algorithms for Subtraction
and 2.4 Multiplication
Compensation: making up for lost numbers by adding them back in the end. 754
Example: #68 Solve. 754-362 -350
754-362 = 754-350-12 = 404-12 = 392 OR You get the same number either 404
way you do it. -12
392
Subtracting Negatives: Breaks apart pieces of the number into its negative pieces and
then adds them back.
Example: #71 Solve. 937-468
937-468= 937-437=500
37-68= -31
500+(-31)=500-31=469
Missing Addend: Attempts finding the missing number as opposed to doing standard
subtraction.
Example: #72 Solve. 805-739
Instead of, 805 we do: 739 and find that: 7 3 9
-739 +??? + 1 -3 -4
805 8 0 5
2.4 Multiplication
Area Model (left): this model is a visual aid for those who dont understand how the
tens break apart during multiplication. It shows how partial products work.
Partial Products (middle): Begins by multiplying ones, 6x3 and 6x4, then the tens,
20x3 and 20x40. Lines the products up and adds them together to get 1,118. Shows the
area model on paper if numbers get too big to draw.
Lattice (right): multiplies by box, dropping the single units and carrying the tens.
