The engineers at the Food Innovation & Resource Centre designed a coconut cutting machine that increased a drinks stall owner's productivity by 400%. The machine can crack 450 coconuts per hour, compared to the 170 coconuts per hour that two workers could previously cut by hand. The machine cuts coconuts in half within a minute and channels the juice into a storage tank for easy dispensing. Since implementing the machine, the stall owner can now easily cope with high customer order volumes.

Innovative Coconut Cutter Paves Way for 400% Increase In Output
The engineers from the Process Engineering Innovation (PEI)
team at FIRC have once again impressed with the ability to design and build a machine unique to the local food industry.
Mr Chua, the owner of a local drinks stall at East Coast Park,
approached FIRC to help him in improving productivity. He had two skilled workers who would spend up to 3 hours daily hacking the coconuts with sharp knives. However, they could only achieve a maximum capacity of 170 coconuts per hour. The process was extremely labour intensive and often resulted in a substantial loss in yield of coconut juice due to spillage.
After months of research and development, FIRC presented
the first ever coconut cutting machine that is able to crack 450 coconuts per hour to the client. This machine increased the clients productivity significantly by 435%. More importantly, the machine is simple and safe to operate as the user just need to press a button to activate the cutter to cut the coconut into half with great precision in less than one minute. The juice would be quickly channeled down into a storage tank which can then be easily dispensed just by a turn of the tap.
Since the implementation of this machine at his stall, coping
with high volume of customers orders is now a breeze!
