Media History of hip-hop

Hip-hop was an underground movement that began to develop from


South Bronx in New York City from the year1970. It is a mixture of
emceeing, break beats and house parties. This movement started to
get more popular in the 2000as hip-hop stared to grow and so forth
its sub genres, such as rap and grime. The popularity of various
artists such as Dr Dre and Eminem in America and JME in UK, grime,
were increasing the popularity of Hip-Hop and its sub genres such as
grime and rap.

XXL

XXL magazine is the no 1 selling music magazine;


it covers areas such as new, music and the
biggest artists. XXL has over 143,000 subscribers
and is published by Harris Publications Inc. Harris
Publications is an American consumer magazine
publisher in New York City. XXL has a target
audience of 18-25. Looking at the target audience
we can see that 55% of the readers are females.

VIBE

Vibe magazine as another mainstream


magazine in which hip-hop is advertised highly.
It has a total circulation of 301,408. The main
publisher is Spin Media. The target audience for
this magazine is aspirational, trendsetting,
multicultural 18-34 year olds. In the media kit
that I was analysing it stats that the majority
of readers are female sitting at 65% of the
population.

Billboard

Billboard magazine is a more dynamic magazine that


has a wider target audience. It has over 15.2 million
worldwide unique online and a total audience of
115,000 total print audience. The main publisher for
billboard is Lynne Segall. It was called the bible of the
music industry by the Wall Street Journal. Billboard is
a more generic, which has a wider music range. Its
target market is 18-34 year olds; the majority of these readers are
females as it states in the media kit that they have a 67% female
audience.
