APPLICATION OF THE ISBD (NBM) STANDARD

IN THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF SERBIA

Summary
Given that non-book materials are different in its form and appearance, several
standards used for cataloging and bibliographic processing of these materials have
been established. Non-book holdings include items that transfer ideas, information
and aesthetic contents in a non-book form. The standard that defines bibliographic
description of the non-book materials is ISBD (NBM). This paper outlines a short
history, purpose and goal of the standard for the bibliographic processing of the non-
book materials. An accent has been placed on key differences between the standards
for bibliographic processing of monographic publications and those for processing of
non-book materials. Areas with the specificities of these items processing are shown
through examples of the practice used in the National Library of Serbia. The most
prominent specificities of the non-book materials cataloging could be detected in
determining the data source, both in general and specific material designation, as
well as in notes which give a short list of contents. In this work, it is noted that ISBD
(NBM) standard does not precisely define the sort of material it refers to, which
enables cataloging of new types of library materials that came as a result of the new
modern and contemporary production technologies.

PROMOTING INFORMATION LITERACY - EXPERIENCE OF THE STUDENTS

CITY CULTURAL CENTER LIBRARY IN BELGRADE

Summary
Librarians have recognized their new mission in information era on time, and
that is promoting of and training users in information literacy. Workshops and lectures
on advanced searching techniques, using, keeping and evaluation of information are
organized in many academic libraries today. More and more information seekers
are searching the Internet as their primary source of information, and that is why
libraries have to provide rich and useful content on their websites and their social
networks profiles, since nowadays the first contact with library users usually happens
to be established in this way.
This paper shows the practice that employees of the Students City Cultural
Center Library have applied for teaching users the basics of information literacy
through their institutional website. Evaluating and citing information tutorials and
guides for searching library catalogs online have been explained, and also the usage
of social networks and other free online applications in promoting library services.

EDUCATION OF LIBRARIANS IN SERBIA
Summary
This paper provides an overview of the education of librarians in Serbia. In

the framework of formal education, the following institutions have been presented:
the Secondary Library School in Belgrade, Department of Library and Information
Science at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade and Department for School Librarians
at the Faculty of Education in Sombor at the University of Novi Sad. The history and
current state of the qualifying examination in librarianship organized and realized
by the National Library of Serbia and the Matica Srpska Library in Novi Sad have
especially been discussed. The author emphasizes the importance of continuing
professional education of library professionals and presents the different forms of
trainings in Serbia which take place within institutions and organizations such as
the National Library of Serbia, Matica Srpska Library in Novi Sad, University Library
Svetozar Markovi in Belgrade, Department of Library and Information Science
at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade, the Serbian Library Association, Association
of School Librarians in Serbia, Library plus. The author also tries to highlight the
advantages and disadvantages of various forms of education for librarians in Serbia,
as well as the lack of coordination in the education of librarians at the national level.

INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM IN LIBRARIANSHIP

Summary
The notion of freedom has been constantly changing its physiognomy. Which
in turn, has led to it being applicable in the cultural sphere nowadays. In order to
make the notion of intellectual freedom pertinent in librarianship, it is necessary
that legal foundation be established. This would have its grounds in international
documents, declarations, manifests, as well as in ethical code. Combined with
incessant fighting against censorship, it is vital to care for intellectual property,
protection of privacy, education of users, continuous education of librarians, as well
as intellectual liberation of a librarian and their profession. Librarians personal
endeavor will not be futile. Today, freedom is the concept one needs to fight for.

LIBRARY MATERIAL LAW

Summary
This paper deals with the old, rare and miniature book fund at the National
Library of Serbia, that is, its old conception and history of events that led to the
creation and adoption of the new conception. The Criteria for old, rare and miniature
book, incorporated in the present Serbian Law on Old and Rare Library Material are
being interpreted. The goal is to popularize three collections at the National Library
of Serbia, especially in the context of cultural property protection, and to indicate
the need for standardized criteria for this type of material, which tends to be only
vaguely defined.

VENICE AND SERBIAN BOOK

Summary
In the ideal map of the Serbian people cultural geography, Venice has been
the westernmost border for a long time, the place where the Serbs used to go back
to print their books in the period between the 15th and 19th century. The zenith of
the Serbian book history in Venice is related to the activities of the Duke Boidar
Vukovi Podgorianin and Teodor and ure Ljubavi in the 16th century, as well as
to that of the Greek family Teodosije in the 18th century, who made Venice the central
place of the bookselling industry dedicated to the Serbs, through publishing books in
the Illyrian script. This study arises from the wish to shed some light on the multi-
century Serbian book history in Venice, paying close attention to the circumstances
in which the Serbian community lived in Venice, as well as to the specificities of the
Venetian printing.

Summary
The paper presents the German library system and its classification, as well as
the history and development of the State Library in Berlin - the Prussian cultural
heritage (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Preuischer Kulturbesitz) with a special
overview of the present state of the book fund. Two separate library buildings in
Unter den Linden and Potsdamer strae with its media and reading rooms have been
presented. There are 1086 entries for Serbian books in the catalog, 146 entries show
up for aak books, and 27 items occur under the term Vladislav Petkovi Dis.

ON A THREE-CENTURY HISTORICAL JOURNEY 250 KILOMETERS LONG

Summary
This work demonstrates foundation and development of the oldest Spanish

cultural institution, the National Library, which is, at the same time, the institution
of the greatest cultural significance in Spain. During the period of three centuries, the
Library has become one of the richest treasuries of written and printed material in the
world. All the collections owned by the Library have been presented in this paper, as
well as the halls where rich and valuable funds are located. Through statistical data
on the Library and its fund, one gains an insight into the magnificence and size of

DIS SPRING JUBILEE (1964-2013)
Summary
For the past half-century, the Public library Vladislav Petkovi Dis has
traditionally been organizing Dis spring, one of the most longevous and prestigious
poetry festivals in Serbia. In the eventful period from March 10th, the date when Dis
was born and the Library Day is celebrated; since 1998 the Library bears the name of
the poet, until the last days of May, the town of aak and this institution honorably
repay their debts to this great local poet through organizing numerous literary events
and gathering enthusiasts and proponents cognizant of the contemporary poetry.
The first, official Dis spring, organized by the Public Library and Adult Education
Center in aak, was held on April 13th, 1964. The best Yugoslav poets attended Dis
birthplace and were pronounced laureates of this unique festival after the second
Dis spring (April 19th, 1965), and since 1988 only the Serbian poets have taken over
this role (in the period 1965-1998 as honorary guests of the Dis spring festival, and
since 1999 as laureates of the Dis prize). However, the idea itself was born a year
before on May 17th, 1963, after a literary evening of the same name took place at
the Municipality Assembly of the town of aak. Since then, literary enthusiasts
and followers of Dis artistic temperament have encircled an incessant fifty-year
development arch and made the festival Dis spring an optimal affirmation of the
ultimate moment in the Serbian poetic tradition.

Summary
This work presents bio-bibliography of Marija Orbovi (1948), library adviser of

the Local History Department of the Public library Vladislav Petkovi Dis, eminent
bibliographer, dedicated research librarian of the literary and cultural heritage of the
aak area, and the recipient of numerous significant awards and recognitions given
for outstanding achievements accomplished in librarianship.

WORK REPORT OF THE PUBLIC LIBRARY VLADISLAV PETKOVI DIS

FOR THE YEAR 2012

Summary
Diverse activities that Public library carries out within its library and
information services both in the municipality of aak and in the Morava region
have been presented in this text, as well as organizing of the traditional poetry
festival Dis spring, various book promotions, readings and nurturing creativity in
young children. Statistical data on the number of users, services, activities of every
department both in the town and nearby village branch libraries are important for
the history of the Library; the data that demonstrate the increase of the contribution
in culture as the Library is the most frequently used local service with more than
250,000 offered services and 162,000 books and newspapers that have been read. All
the relevant data regarding institution activities indicate rise. Total incomes were
32,528,000 RSD: 28,002,679 RSD of the total financial resources were received from
the towns budget (8% more than last year), the Ministry of Culture co-financed
Library projects with 2,213,000 RSD, 768,000 RSD came from public programs and
900,000 RSD from its own resources. Reading public of the Library was enlarged by
325 new members, which gave the total number of 6138 library users, and the fund
itself was enriched with 6447 publications and picture books.
