    Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter born in 1907 who is best known for her self-portraits which often depicted her physical and psychological pain. She was disabled by polio as a child and later suffered a near-fatal bus accident which caused lifelong medical issues. Kahlo began painting while recovering and married fellow painter Diego Rivera. Throughout their tumultuous marriage, Kahlo continued developing her unique and deeply personal painting style which explored themes of identity, postcolonialism, and feminism.

    contractedpolioandwasbedriddenforninemonths.Kahlowalkedwithalimpbutherfather

    stillpushedhertoplaysoccer,swim,andevenwrestle.In1922KahloenrolledattheNational

    PreparatorySchool whereshewouldthenmeetherhusbandDiegoRivera.Kahlowasoneofthe

    fewfemalestudentsthatattended.Thenin1925Kahlowasinvolvedinaterriblebusaccident

    whereherhipwasimpaledbyametalrod.Theinjurycausedmultiplefracturesinherhip,spine,

    andpelvis.AfterKahlorecoveredshestartedpainting,herfirstpaintingwasaselfportraitand

    shegaveittoGmezArias.AtthesametimetheyoungartistjoinedtheYoungCommunist

    LeagueandTheMexicanCommunistParty.In1928KahloandRiverareconnectedandhe

    encouragedhertokeepmakingart.Thenextyearthecouplemarriedandtraveledtomanyart

    showsinwhichRiverahadpiecesin.In1930thecouplelivedinSanFranciscoandwhereKahlo

    presentedherpaintingFridaandDiegoatthesixthannualExhibitionoftheSanFrancisco

    SocietyofWomenArtists.AfterreturningtoMexicoRiverahadanaffairwithKhalo'ssisterthe

    artistthenleftRiveraandcutoffherwellknownhair.Kahlodesperatelywantedchildrenbut

    wasdevastatedin1934whenshehadamiscarriage.KahloandRiverawentthroughperiodsof

    separationbutgotbacktogetherin1937tohelpexiledSovietcommunistLeonTrotskyandhis

    wifeNataliain1937whenthecouplecameandstayedatthebluehousewiththem.Duringthis

    periodTrotskywasafraidthatenemyJosephStalinwouldassassinatehim.Ithasalsobeensaid

    thatKahloandTrotskyhadanaffairduringthistime.AlthoughKahloandRiverawerelegally
    married,shesaidRiverabelongstonobody.Meaningthatsheallowedhimtobewithanother

    woman.

    Kahlo'spaintingsaremostlyselfportraitsandportraitsofclosefriendsandfamily.Kahlo

    hasbeenknowntoavarietyofmediumsbutmostlyusedoil.Kahlowasonceaskedtopainta

    portraitofclosefriendDorothyHaleaftershehadtragicallycommittedsuicide.Kahloinstead

    paintedagraphicimageofHalejumpingoffofthebuildingthatshehadkilledherselfon.The

    paintingwasintendedforHale'smotherbutuponseeingthepaintingthefamilydeclinedtotake

    it.In1941KahloreceivedacommissionfromtheMexicangovernmenttopaintportraitsof

    importantmexicanwomen,sadlyKahlowasunabletofinishtheprojectduetoherfather'sdeath.

    In1953Kahloachievedherfirstsoloexhibition.Howevershehadbeeninthehospitalwith

    gangrene,butthatdidnotstopherfromgoing.ArrivinginanambulanceKahlowalkedaround

    andspoketopeopleaboutherartwork.
