Alg 2 - Lesson 1.4 - Unit 5
Objective: You will be able to Identify zeros of quadratic polynomials when factorizations are available and sketch graphs
of polynomial functions..

Classwork
1. Read this section carefully
2. Write important words and information
Example A showed how to find the vertex of a quadratic function in factored form. If the equation were in general form
instead, you might be able to put it in factored form and then follow the same steps, but theres another way. First, note
that each rectangle diagram below represents a perfect square because both factors are the same.
Notice the pattern. For a perfect square, the first and last terms of the trinomial are squares, and the middle term is twice
a product. This knowledge will be useful in the investigation, which helps you convert a quadratic function from general
form to vertex form.
Investigation: Complete the Square
You can use rectangle diagrams to help convert from general form to vertex form.
Exercises
1. Work Independently to solve the following problems
2. Anything that we dont finish in class, you will have to work on your
own
1. Factor each quadratic expression.
4. Rewrite each expression in the form ax 2+ bx+ c , and then identify the coefficients, a, b, and c.
7. A rock is thrown upward from the edge of a 50-meter cliff overlooking Lake Superior, with an initial velocity of 17.2
meter/second. Define variables and write an equation that models the height of the rock.
a. Write a function that relates time and height for this object.
c. When does the object reach its maximum height? What is the maximum height?
