Classwork
1. Read this section carefully
2. Write important words and information
The quadratic formula gives you a way to find the roots of any equation in the form ax 2+ bx+ c=0 . The investigation will
give you an opportunity to apply the quadratic formula in different situations.
Remember, you can find exact solutions to some quadratic equations by factoring. However, most don't factor easily. The
quadratic formula can be used to solve any quadratic equation.
It's important to note that a quadratic equation must be in the general form ax2 + bx+ c= 0 before you use the quadratic
formula.
Example B
Solve 3 x2 +5 x=1
Solution
To use the quadratic formula, first write the equation in the form ax2 + bx+ c = 0 and identify the coefficients.
Remember, you can find exact solutions to some quadratic equations by factoring. However, most don't factor easily. The
quadratic formula can be used to solve any quadratic equation.
Exercises
1. Work Independently to solve the following problems
2. Anything that we dont finish in class, you will have to work on your
own
1. Solve
2. Rewrite each equation in general form, ax 2+ bx+ c=0 . Identify a, b, and c.
3. Evaluate each expression using your calculator. Round your answers to the nearest thousandth.
4. Use the roots of the equations in Exercise 4 to write each of the functions in factored form, y=a( xr 1 )(xr 2) .
7. Use the quadratic formula to find the zeros of y= 2x2 + 2x+ 5. Explain what happens. Graph y= 2x2 + 2x+ 5 to
confirm your observation. How can you recognize this situation before using the quadratic formula?
