Plagiarism Definition

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

I Plagiarize means:
transitive verb: to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of
another) as ones own : use (anothers production) without
crediting the source
intransitive verb: to commit literary theft : present as new and
original an idea or product derived from an existing source
I Plagiarism means:
act of copying the ideas or words of another person without
giving credit to that person

Importance of Plagiarism

I Plagiarism is theft of intellectual property.


I Plagiarism is cheating.
I Plagiarism may result in receiving a failing grade or zero
Lack of Knowledge about Plagiarism
I It does not matter if the person whose work you have cited is
alive or dead. If it is not your own idea, you must cite your
source.
I If you translate or paraphrase something, you must still give a
citation.
I If you use a picture from the Internet, you must cite the source.

Intentional:
I Copying a friend's work
I Buying or borrowing papers
I Cutting and pasting blocks of text from electronic sources
without documenting
I Media borrowingwithout documentation
I Web publishing without permissions of creators
Unintentional:
I Careless paraphrasing
I Poor documentation
I Quoting excessively
