The UN recognition of the International Yoga Day is a watermark in our
cultural history. Some might think that this is trivial and inconsequential. After all, almost everything these days has a day dedicated to it.
But the importance of International Yoga Day lies in the global
institutional recognition now accorded to Yoga. Yoga is no more a mystical, oriental construct. It is a very real contribution from India to the World.
Besides, the spiritual and philosophical elements of Yoga, it is now seen
in light of the tangible health benefits.
In todays culture of fast-paced consumerism, we must be careful not
to package it in a commercial form. Cultural appropriation must not mean losing sight of the fundamentals.
