Bringing the African Community Together
Aldersgate will be hosting an African Conference the weekend of
June 10th and 11th. This event will offer an opportunity for us to bring
the African community, both in Charlottesville and across the
Conference, together for worship and fellowship. There will be many
ways to help, but the most urgent need is a family, or individual, to host
the American missionary, Pauline Burthwick, from Friday night, June 9 th
through Monday morning, June 12th. Please contact Kathy Morse or
Pastor Rob if this is something you can do.
We want to show Aldersgate hospitality and are asking that you
please consider ways you may help by providing fruit, cheese and
cracker trays, or other dishes of your choice. A meal is being provided
each day for our guests (many of them from out of town) so we will also
need funds to purchase African food, or you may purchase it yourself. A
signup sheet is available in the Reed Room along with a listing of needs.

Summer Show!
AUMC and The Black Box Players production of A Midsummer Night's
Dream is coming soon! Casting is open to all adults and will be held on
Tuesday 5/23 at 6:30 pm in the Reed Room. Performances are on
Thurs. 7/27 thru Sunday 7/30 and Thurs. 8/3 thru Sun. 8/6
If you would like to be in the show but you cannot make casting on

We also need lots of production help so if volunteering behind the
scenes interests you please let me know. We encourage you to join the
fun this summer!
The local church is the most significant arena through which disciples of
Jesus Christ are made and Jesus disciples reach out into the world to
share Gods love. It is in and through the church that Jesus Christ is
proclaimed and professed as Lord and Savior. Please contact Pastor Rob

found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate when it is passed
during the service if you wish to explore the meaning of membership in
the life of Aldersgate Church.
GUESS WHAT TIME IT IS
It's time for Spring Cleaning! Our trustees and additional caring adults
are giving our Nursery a Spring Clean to continue to make certain that
we're providing a safe and clean space for our youngest children. This
process may take a few weeks. All children who are regularly placed in
the nursery for care during Worship and/or Sunday school may be taken
to the Parent Room where they will be looked after. Additionally,
families who regularly use the Parent Room during Worship are
encouraged to continue doing so. Thank you to all who are making this
Spring Clean possible!
 2017 Annual Conference Mission Offering
Each year the churches of the Virginia Conference contribute to an
Annual Conference Mission Offering to benefit various missions. This
year Bishop Lewis has announced the Annual Conference Mission
Offering goal of $200,000 to focus on the following missional priority
projects:
$50,000 Cambodia - For continued support for our partnership with the
Methodist Mission in Cambodia as they move toward being an
autonomous Methodist Church.
$25,000 Brazil For our continued long term support of the Shade and
Fresh Water ministry with at risk children across several conferences in
the Methodist Church of Brazil.
$25,000 Mozambique Our partnership with the United Methodist
Church of Mozambique focuses on education by providing lay training
resources that strengthens their discipleship and witness across both
conferences in Mozambique.
$50,000 Virginia Long Term Disaster Recovery We are committed to a
long term response to those whose lives were changed by tornadoes
and hurricane Matthew in 2016. The funding of the recovery will allow
further teams to answer the call to make a compassionate response.
$25,000 Ethnic Minority Missional Ministries Funds for grants to go
toward developing ministry outreach in the conference to immigrants
and other marginalized groups.
$25,000 Virginia Volunteers in Mission To provide funds available to
small membership faith communities who wish to engage in mission that
may lack resources.
You may contribute to this missional offering through Sunday, June
11th. Make your check out to: "Aldersgate Church", but also be sure to
write: "Annual Conference Missional Offering" in the memo of your
check or envelope. Aldersgate Church's lay delegate to annual
conference, Susan Painter, will present the offering at a worship service
on Saturday, June 17th at the annual conference in Hampton, VA. Thank

John Wesley and the People Called "Methodist':
Understanding and Claiming our Methodist Roots
Tuesdays at 10am and Wednesdays at 7pm
In 1728, John Wesley and a small group of "Methodists" began a
renewal movement within the Church of England that has grown to a
world-wide movement with more than 80 million members in 80
denominations and more than 130 countries world-wide. In our study,
we will begin with examining church history and the roots of
Methodism. We will look at England in the time of Wesley. We will
examine our United Methodist history, including growth and struggles.
We will examine some of John Wesley's writings. We will look at
Methodist theology and practice with an eye toward learning if there is
anything to reclaim from our Methodist roots. See communication card

Guest Parking Spaces are Coming for 1st Time Guests
Welcoming and hospitality have been and continue to be notable
characteristics of Aldersgate Church. We take seriously our call to be
the body of Christ and to build God's kingdom locally and around the
world. Following mystery worshippers attending Aldersgate Church at
the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017, the various ministry areas at
Aldersgate have been reviewing the reports and discerning how we can
be an even more welcoming community. To demonstrate more visibly
our welcoming and hospitality, "first-time guest" parking spaces and
signs will soon be installed in the parking lot at the Church entrance
near Fashion Sq. Mall. No current handicap spaces will be affected. If

Graduates
Do you know a special high school, college, military or advanced degree
student who has graduated, or will be graduating, this spring? If so,
please send his/her name, school, and degree earned to Rachel

recognize graduates in the church bulletin in June.
