Rhetorical Analysis Essay

Jane Addams, was an acknowledged and respected public speaker. Who had focused her

time to social services in the city of Chicago. On February 23,103 she gave a speech to the city's

Union League Club. To remember the birthday of George Washington. Addams uses in her

speech: rhetorical questions, parallel structure, and pathos to communicate her points of the

importance of Washington's legacy.

To begin with, Addams uses rhetorical questioning to involve the reader with her address.

Addams uses this form to keep the reader involved causing them not to lose focus in what she is

saying. For example in the first paragraph, first sentence Addams starts off with What is a great

man who has made his mark upon history?. With simply starting off her speech with this

statement it indulges the readers and attracts them to continue listening . She continues using this

device throughout her speech, as in line 26 First, as a soldier. What is it that we advice about the

soldier?. With the sole purpose of just also including the reader/listener and for them to have a

say and also think about it in their own minds while Addams speaks.

Furthermore, Addams also uses the rhetorical device of parallel structure. Parallel

structure has the effect of being more demanding, having a greater response. Addams uses this

device in the second paragraph of her address, line 21, with simplify the phrase We will. The

words We will have to, We will have to appeal, We will all have, all have the same effect

with the same purpose. Addams used that device multiple times because it helped get to the

point, however with the sense of it being firm and tuff. The purpose was for the message get to

the reader/listener in the way that made the reader/listener feel like oh this is important I need to

hear/read carefully.
Nonetheless, Addams also used pathos to communicate to her audience. In the end

Addams talked about Washington as a citizen. Might bring a wrong to his beloved nation he

went back to his plantation on the Potomac (lines 90-93). The effect of Addams using using the

word such as beloved, or how he went back to his plantation being a common person. The

attracted the audience to believe that Washington, legacy wasnt bad because he was a common

man. The purpose of pathos was to get to the audience in a deeper level and help communicate to

them better.
