SAN SAAB CLEAN UP PROJECT!

Introduction

San Saab canal is a royal thought from King Rama III which he wanted to make a
connection between Chaopraya River and Bang Pa Kong River to make more convenient
trading route and transportation. However, in the recent decade, San Saab canal is one of the
well-known canal that has the most dirty and toxic water in Thailand. For example, people
who usually use this way to travel, they said that the water has very bad smell, looks dirty
and full of trashes. There are 3 major causes which affect the quality of water. First of all,
there are a lot of households which locate near this canal ,and people usually throw wastes
and water from left daily habit to the canal. Secondly, because there are many boats around
there which left oil in the water that make the river toxicated. Lastly, lack of peoples
consciousness about how importance of environment is because they might think that it is
others responsibility to solve the problem. People who live there have tried to manage with
this problems for many long time. Since 2522, they tried to solve the problems by some
simple ways. For example, do not drop some trashes that will cause toxic in the water, do not
pour the toxic water into the canal, and also pick up water hyacinth which is the kind of
water plants that will cause many disadvantages to the water in the canal because it grows
and spreads so quickly and also can make the water becomes more toxic as well. However,
we will use the water hyacinth as a raw material to produce the biogas and that will be
advantage more to the water. Moreover, the community had the policy to do some kinds of
Biological fermentation water because they believe that it will solve this problem and the
quality of water will be better. However, all of these methods can solve the problems for only
short time because the San Saab canal in long canal and that makes the problems come back
easier. Furthermore, there are some transportation which is boat that people use in order to
cross the canal and it affects the waters quality to become worse. Anyway, there are some of
other organization that also tries to solve the problems, but, now, there are still no
organization that can manage and solve with this problems completely and successfully.

Objectives: what do your teams plan to do and why?

1. close the canal
2. put EM balls
3. Plant water hyacinth
4. Educate people about the importance
5. Build a building to keep the stuffs and office

First, we will close the Khlong Saen Saeb to solve the problem. We will put EM balls
(Effective Microorganism Ball) are mixed cultures of beneficial naturally-occurring
organisms that can be applied as inoculants to increase the microbial diversity of soil
ecosystem. They consist mainly of the photosynthesizing bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, yeasts,
actinomycetes and fermenting fungi. Next, we will design and build the building that will
help managing the time to release and pause the Em ball in order to make the project
effective. Moreover, our building will attach the solar cells to store the energy from the Sun
and we will use all of those energy to run the machine and the building and this will help
saving the electrical energy as well because the energy from the sun is the natural one.
Talking about the Em ball, the Em ball also help to snatch a bacteria food ,so the bad bacteria
will die. After we drop the Em ball for two weeks we will test the oxygen in water again ,then
we will plant water hyacinth which can help to increase the oxygen in water ,however, water
hyacinth will spread rapidly ,so that we should make a boundary to limit the growth. Test the
oxygen in water every two days ,and when the oxygen back to the unharmed rate ,then we
will remove the water hyacinth out. Try to bring all wastewater for treatment. Install the
chaipattana low speed surface aerator to keep continue treat the water to be better.

Long term : Because wastewater mostly come from community ,so we will promote
the campaign about treated water before release to Klong.

Materials:
EM balls

Dirt. It is usually best to use clay-like dirt that can easily be formed into balls.
Activated EM-1 (AEM).
Molasses (At 10% the volume of the Activated EM-1. For example, 7
tablespoons of molasses for 1 liter (quart) of AEM.)
EM Bokashi.
EM-X Ceramics Powder. (In Japan, EM Super Cera Ferment C or Terra C is
used.)
water hyasine
the equipment to build the building such as concrete, mirror
