of competing at an
important tennis tournament next year. I dont usually stay out
late, and I go to the gym
regularly. I dont have a lot of free time. Sometimes I go out at
night or on the weekend,

1. Some scientists say that dinosaurs died out after a large meteorite
fell on Earth from outer
space. They think the climate changed on the planet, so some plants
became scarce. The
dinosaurs didnt have enough food to eat, so they died.
2. Loss of habitat is one of the most important causes of extinction.
Countries clear land for
agriculture and housing, so populations increase. Forests, jungles
and grassland disappear.
Humans invade the animals natural habitats.
3. Conservationists created national parks near the end of the twentieth
century to protect the
environment and animals. Yellowstone was the first national park in
the world. It was
created in the northwestern United States in 1872. Yosemite Park
was created in
California in 1890, and the Kruger Game Reserve was created in
South Africa in 1898.
Now there are more than 100 national parks in 120 countries
throughout the world.

You : Mr. Van der Merwe, can you tell us about
yourself. Why did you decide to become
a game warden?
Warden : I used to spend all my vacation here in the park. I
loved the park, and so I always
wanted to be a game warden.
You : What do you love about the park?
Warden : I love the wildlife and the free open spaces.
You : What is your job/are our responsibilities/do
you do?
Warden : Well the job of a game warden is to protect the
animals, and the visitors, too.
You : How many tourists/visitors do you have every
year?
Warden : We get thousands of tourists every year, from all
over the world. We estimate
that we have 6,000 visitors every day.
You : Why do the tourists/visitors come to the
park?
Warden : They come to see a wide variety of animals and
plants. Of course, many want
to see the lions, elephants, rhinos, and leopards.
You : What is the biggest problem you have in
protecting the animals?
Warden : Our biggest problem is the poachers, the illegal
hunters. They kill rhinos for
their horns and elephants for their tusks. We always
have to look for hunters
and stop them before they can kill animals.

LISTENING SCRIPT
One of the biggest problems in cities around the world is disposing of
garbage. Mexico City
produces approximately 11,000 tons every day. One weeks garbage is
enough to fill the Aztec
Stadium, one of Mexicos largest. But the United States produces the
most garbage of all the
countries in the world: about 210 million tons a year. Thats about four
and one half pounds for
each person a day. Some cities have recycling centers. They separate
paper, glass, cans, and
plastic from the regular waste.
Today almost any kind of garbage can be recycled, and the
environment can be protected.
For example, fifty kilos of recycled paper saves one tree. Some cities
have trained their citizens
and encouraged them to keep their cities clean. In many cities in the
United States, people have
to put plastic bottles and cans in separate garbage bags or cans, Paper
also is kept separate.
The plastic, paper, and metal are taken to special centers for recycling.
In Curitiba, a large city in the south of Brazil, the inhabitants like to
say that theirs is the
most ecological city in the world. The city council found a very
practical solution to the problem
of trash: recyclable trash can be exchanged for bus coupons or for food.

Before television, the cell phone, and the Internet, people had
more time for one another.
When you visited someone, the person sat with you, and you
talked to each other. You had a
good long chat over a cup of coffee, because no one called to
talk to you on the cell phone.
Today, anybody without a cell phone is considered old-fashioned.
And if you want to talk to
somebody in the family, you have to wait until the TV
commercials come on. Everyone is too
busy watching TV, or talking on the phone, or surfing the net, to

To form adverbs, we can often add -ly to adjectives. With
adjectives that already end in -y, we
change the y to i; for example, the adverb form of happy is
happily. When the adjective ends
in -e, we drop the e; for example, the adverb form of probable is
probably. However. when -ly
is added to adjectives that end in -l, we double the l; for
example, the adverb form of cheerful
is cheerfully.

The practice of banking has been around for at least 2,000 years. In
ancient Egypt, Babylonia,
and Greece, people put silver and gold in banks to keep it safe, and
the bankers loaned
the gold and silver at high interest rates. Around 600 B.C., banking
was developed to become
more similar to what it is today. With the expansion of industry and
trade in the late 18th and
19th centuries, the banking industry grew rapidly. Nations developed
their own banking
systems based on their own distinctive economic and social customs.

LISTENING SCRIPT
Reporter : In todays program, Your Side of the Story,
were going to interview Mr. Dan
Murray, who represents the farming community of
Belview, and Ms. Jessica Ryland
of the Department of Roads and Highways. Mr.
Murray, I know that youre
organizing a protest march in favor of the farmers.
Why?
Mr. M : If we dont bring our problem to town, and let
the people know whats happening,
Well lose one of the most beautiful scenic routes in
our state. We think that people
will be against the highway.
Reporter : And how else will the new highway affect the
people of this city?
Mr. M : People will start drinking contaminated water.
If the highway cuts through the Belviewarea, new
housing projects and factories will go up, and they will pollute
the river.
Reporter : What do you have to say about that, Ms.
Ryland?
Ms. R : That isnt true. If factories go up near the
river, they will have to obey environmental
standards. They wont be able to dump their
chemicals into the river.
Reporter : And will farmers lose their land, and have to
move out?
Ms. R : Well, their land will be worth much more.
They will be able to sell their land at a
high price. Theyll be able to buy land in other areas.
The highway means good
things: it will bring development, and will create
hundreds of new jobs.
Reporter : Should we stop progress and save the scenic
route? What do you think? Please
call and give your opinion. If you agree with Mr.
Murray, call (800) 974-6831.

Because any single decision one makes can have a huge impact
on the rest of his or her life,
there are several websites that are dedicated entirely to making
difficult decisions. Some offer
guidance and advice on making decisions related to a specific
topic (for example, careers),
while others provide software that explains a formula, or system,
for making decisions.
These include newcareer.com, StrugglingTeens.com, HelpMaking
Decisions.com, one
splitsecond.com, and matrixcognition.com. Another site is
cetos.org. One of the goals of
this site, formed by CETOS (Center for Ethics and Toxics), is to
help people make decisions
about their everyday lives that have an impact on the
environment.

Everyone dreams three or four times a night. For some people,
its common to remember their
dreams. But for many people, its difficult to do so. You can
learn to remember your dreams
better. Here are some tips. Buy a notebook and make sure to put
it by the side of your bed.
When you wake up during the night or in the morning, avoid
opening your eyes immediately. Try
to recall your dream. Picture where you were and what you were
doing. Try to remember what
happened just before that. Keep trying to remember the previous
event. Dont expect to be able
to remember everything. Then write down what happened
quickly. Dont stop writing until you.ve
written everything that you can. Review your dream journal. Do
you begin to see patterns in your
dreams? Do you think the dreams tell what is happening in your
life?
