INTRODUCTION OF CIM

Computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) is the integration of the total manufacturing

enterprise through the use of integrated systems and data communications coupled with new managerial
philosophies that improve organizational and personnel efficiency. CIM is the manufacturing approach
of using computers to control the entire production process. Besides, CIM also is the integration
of all enterprise operations and activities around a common corporate data repository. It is the use
of integrated system and data communication coupled with new managerial philosophies.

Furthermore, CIM is not a product or something that can be purchased and installed. It is
a way of thinking of something and solving the problems. This integration allows individual
processes to exchange information with each other initiate actions. A computer-integrated
manufacturing system is not the same as a "lights-out factory", which would run completely
independent of human intervention, although it is a big step in that direction. Part of the system
involves flexible manufacturing, where the factory can be quickly modified to produce different
products, or where the volume of products can be changed quickly with the aid of computers.

There are lots of CIM concepts that are applied in company which are visual inspection,
robots, computer-aided design (CAD), production line, as well as manual and automated system.
There are a lots of potential benefits of CIM in company. Firstly, it improve the quality of the
product, lower the total cost and increase in manufacturing productivity.
COMPANYS BACKGROUND

On 5th May 2017, Friday, we are form BTE Engineering Technologys students
was visited TT Electronic Sdn Bhd which are located at Kuantan Pahang. The base of this TT
Electronic Sdn Bhd is located in United Kingdom. Besides United Kingdom, TT electronic Sdn
Bhd also sites in Suzhou China and also Perry USA and is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
This company provides engineer in electronics for performance critical applications, develop
products (custom) for regulated markets in specialist areas and also to help their customer in
solving problem base on their needs.

Turner, W.Tyzack were the persons who started this company in 1812. Next, this
company was established in Sheffield as supplier of tools. In 1906, this company incorporated as
a private company. In1950s, this company responded to the need for inexpensive, heat resistant
trimmer with a new material-cermet. During 2000s they rename the company as TT Electronics
Sdn Bhd. The word TT is based on the person who started this company which were Turner and
W.Tyzack.

At first, their products are about automotive, communications, aerospace and in general
industrial market. Besides these products they also produce products based on medical. However,
they had stop producing product based on medical because there are a lot of procedure and other
criteria that need to be considered before producing it.
Today, TT electronics Sdn Bhd produce product line encompass trimming potentiometers,
precision potentiometers, resistor, transformers and inductor as well as custom integrated of
these technologies. Their manufacture products on three continents and service customers
globally from nine directs sales offices and over 200 representative and distributor office. Their
direct offices are located abroad such as in California, Scotland, Paris, France, Italy, Tokyo,

APPLICATION OF CIMS SYSTEM IN TT ELECTRONIC COMPANY

Basically, most of the operation from TT Electronic Sdn Bhd was conducted by both
manually and automatically. This is due to the certain of their product are based on the customer
need. They usually make a custom product based on their customer, so they prefer to use flexible
machine as it can do many task in a single machine.

During our last visit, there were lots of CIM application that applied on this TT
Electronic Sdn Bhd. One of them are about their quality control of their products. Quality control
used to detect and possibly reject defective work units or products that are produced on the line.
This company used visual inspection machine as quality control to their products especially to
check the series number of their small magnetic components.

Picture 1 is one of the example of visual inspection machine that are used in the
company. As the result of using this machine, the quality production of the products that are
produce became better and less defect products found. Besides, by using this machine, the
number of defect are less compare with the manual check and time require to check the quality
of the products. Furthermore, by using this machine, they also can control the type or the
specification of the quality product that they want.

Besides that, TT Electronics also applied one of the CIM system which was about their
cell design. They used new layout for their cell design which is U-shape cell design. There are a
lot of benefits of using U-shape cell design, firstly, the shortening of distances allow sharing of
work as well as reduce of transportation waste. Next, it also will reduce the space that are uses in
the company. It also can make the communication among team mates in the cell easier. Picture 2

Lastly, TT Electronics Sdn Bhd also use conveyor belt. For this company, they use two
machines which are conveyer belt machine as well as electronic oven. This machine use to
transport the components through the oven in high temperature. From this application, they had
save their time to finish the process of the products. The worker just need to put the components
on the belt conveyor and let the components to move itself instead to take the components and
put it into the oven and wait until the process to finish. Besides, it also help in reducing uses a lot
of man power to complete this process. Picture 3 shows the machine that combine both conveyor
belt and oven.

company. There are a lot of application of CIM that are applied in this company which are about
their production line, quality control, transportation of the products and many more. Lastly, from
this site visit, we also exposed more to the machine that are used in manufacturing and
understand more about how the machines work instead only learning theory in class.
