Tier 1: Whole Group Instruction


Content: The features of an analogue clock and the purpose of these features.
Process:
Have students identify the features of an analogue clock and list on the whiteboard.

Think, pair and share: The purpose of these features.


- Which one is the hour hand and which one is the minute hand.
- Why do we have two hands?
Model: Draw a circle on the whiteboard and tell the students that I need help with forming the clocks face.
- Discuss the need for the numbers to be spread evenly.
- Discuss: that the numbers represent both hours and minutes and that each number is a product of five.
Independent activity: Students are to make their own clock face using the blank clock face template.

Explicit teaching:
- The big hand is the minute hand.
- The small hand is the hour hand and this tell us the name of the hour.
- Each number represents a product of five.
- The minute lines tell us the exact minute and keep the numbers spread out.
Point to each number and skip count by five.
Model: Fill in some of the numbers on the blank clock face template.
- Have students suggest what the number would be.
- Explain that the numbers go from one to twelve in clockwise direction.
Independent activity: Students are to make their own analogue clock using the clock face template that has the
numbers 12,3,6,9 on it.

Tier 3: Intensive Individual/ small group instruction


Content: How the numbers are positioned on the clock and what each number represents. Students will also learn how
to distinguish between the hour and minute hand.
Process:
Explicit teaching:
- The hour hand is the short hand and the minute hand is the big hand.
- Point at each number and inform students that each number represents both the hours and minutes and when it is
representing minutes each number goes up by five from the previous number.
Skip count by fives whilst pointing at each number.
Activity: Model and complete together the clock face template that has the numbers 12,3,6,9 on it.

Product:
- Students are able to distinguish between the minute and hour hand.
- Understand that the numbers represent both the hours and minutes.
