Artist Statement

The project our photography class was assigned was called the Joiners project.

This project was inspired by the famous British artist named David Hockney, who was

most recognized for his photography collages and paintings. He would make abstract

collages using edges to combine pictures together to show different perspectives of an

object/person. The purpose of this project was to make a collage about a person, place, or

thing that we want to pay more attention to, that we dont want to forget, or that we want

to reveal and make sure viewers see.

My collage was on my best friend Alex, and the 3 symbols I included were of

course my friend Alex, the school campus, and his face. The first symbol was my friend

Alex and what it means is that I dont want to forget who he is as a person. I dont want

to forget all the memories we have together or our friendship. The second symbol was the

school campus and what it means is that school is a big part of my life because I have

spent most of my life so far in school and I do not want to forget all the memories I have

in school or the friends I have either. The last symbol I used was Alexs face which is part

of his body but what it means is that although I dont want to forget our friendship or our

memories, I also do not want to forget how he looks like. I researched David Hockneys

work and how he made collages about people he cared about or did not want to forget,

and that inspired me to make a collage about Alex because I care for him and do not want

to forget him.

I created this joiners collage because it was our task and I chose these symbols

because these symbols are things that I dont want to forget and that are important to me.

My portrait is about friendship because Alex represents that friendship bond that we have.

I feel like my artwork would be best seen in posters hung up on schools or somewhere

where other students can see to realize how important friendship can be. I would prefer

my artwork to be in school than museums because more students would see it in schools

rather than museums. What I expect from my audience is that they understand my

message and that they value their friendship more and that they appreciate it. My work

fits in the history of art practice because I used the same joiners method as David

Hockney to make my collage.

In conclusion, I think my artwork best relates to the work of David Hockney,

because I used the same technique and method as he did, and I was influenced by his

collages. In his artwork, he would take pictures of people he cared about and would want

to send a message to the viewer, as did I. David influenced me to do my collage on my

friend and school because he made a collage on his mom. My three symbols were Alex,

the school, and his face.
