Welcome to English 11. My name is Ms. Marcus and I currently teach AP Language and Composition, World Literature, and
American Literature. The purpose of this years course is to study the various styles of literature from America and Great Britain to
explore the concept of the American Dream. Sources include but are not limited to excerpts from Nathaniel Hawthorne, Native
American Myths and Legends, short stories and poems from Edgar Allan Poe, The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald, selections from
William Shakespeare, and A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams to name a few. Class time will explore discussion
models, debate structures, baseline/formal assessments, and skill practice through group work and independent study. The ENG 11
course will focus on proving student created theses through an analysis of literary elements, evidence, whilst developing rigorous
vocabulary and exploring the use of counterpoints to strengthen arguments. We will be implementing the Common Core standards
by placing specific emphasis on using academic language, developing argumentation, and using nonfiction textual evidence to
help guide their success. Our class will follow the school wide grading policy breakdown of 50%=exams/quizzes/projects, 30%=
classwork/ participation, and 20%=homework. Late homework and projects will not be accepted. If you are absent you have one day
to complete the assignment you have missed. Homework must be written in the TYWLS student Planner daily. The coursework is
cumulative. Each skill and concept will grow and connect throughout the units. I am excited to work with your families this year to
prepare our students for success this year as well as help prepare them for the English Regents they will take in June this year.

TYWLS Course Outline for Students and Families 2016- 2017

Course Name: ENG 11: American Literature Credit Value: 2 credits
Prerequisite: ENG 9, 10 Department: English
Teacher: Ms. Marcus Date: September 2016
*All courses assess student performance based on the TYWLS School-Wide Grading Policy for grades 6-12.

Course Description: American Literature will cover topics such as the American Dream, Colonialism, Westward Expansion,
Gothic Literature, The Golden Age, and Civil Rights. This class will develop vocabulary, essay writing, discussion skills,
reading comprehension and analysis, and creativity. Some authors to look forward to are Nathaniel Hawthorne, William
Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Tennessee Williams Students are expected to be prepared for class
having completed the required readings and assignments, as well as adhering to the appropriate dress code since all factors
will contribute to their classwork grade.

Resources/ Materials for Differentiation: Binder, loose leaf (college ruled) paper, a folder, dividers, pens. (Highlighters and
post -it notes are recommended). Students will receive state standardized rubrics, as well as develop their own rubric and
participation checklists for class discussion and projects.

Project-based Learning Opportunities: All work in this class will be cumulative. Students are expected to build on prior
knowledge, and skills learned this year. Keeping a neat and organized binder will be a year long, major project. Socratic
Seminar and Discussion Models will be another project-based learning opportunities for students.

Extra Help: Students may e-mail with questions/concerns and are welcome to visit after school for extra help on Tuesdays
