Global History I (2016-2017)

Ms. Cheryl Jordan

Dear TYWLS Student and Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to Global History and Geography! This year, we will work together to explore the
foundations of our modern world by studying civilizations around the world from those established by
the earliest humans through the 16th and 17th centuries. Next year, you will continue this study in the
modern era, up until present day.

The purpose of the two-year Global History and Geography course is to explore the history,
geography and culture of various civilizations around the world throughout history. Students will
develop your reading, writing, and analytical skills and will learn a great deal through the rigorous
analysis of primary source documents. We use the workshop model to explore the major themes of
history in a rigorous, student-centered learning environment. We will consider historical events
through a variety of perspectives and what you study will emphasize patterns in history revolving
around the following unifying course themes.

1. Individual Development and Cultural Identity

2. Development, Movement, and Interaction of Cultures
3. Time, Continuity, and Change
4. Geography, Humans, and the Environment
5. Development and Transformation of Social Structures
6. Power, Authority, and Governance
7. Civic Ideals and Practices
8. Creation, Expansion, and Interaction of Economic Systems
9. Science, Technology, and Innovation
10. Global Connections and Exchanges

Because much of what we do will revolve around individual values and opinions on many issues,
respect is a fundamental principle in our classroom. Everyone is equally valued in our community
and is entitled to her own viewpoint on any issue. We will seek to understand each others views and
those of the people we study. And while we may disagree on issues, we will never disrespect the
person who puts forth an idea or position.

I look forward to working with you during this exciting school year where you begin your high school
experience and develop your strengths as a student.

Ms. Jordan

II. Grading Categories (School-Wide)

Assessments 50 % (Tests 30%, Quizzes 20%) Homework 20% Class
Assignments & Project 30%

Tests will be formatted similarly to the Regents Examination in Global History

and Geography, and will include multiple-choice questions, document analysis,
and document-based and thematic essays.
In addition to traditional tests and quizzes, authentic and project-based
learning are important to our learning experience in Global History. These
include, but are not limited to: class discussions, Socratic seminars, debates,
mock trials, role plays, simulations, investigations, and Regents-style essay
writing.
Because homework is intended to prepare you for a particular days learning,
its value is diminished if you have not completed it in a timely manner. For
this reason, late homework will not be accepted. If you are absent, check
our Edmodo page and your agenda sheet for any assignments that you
missed. See me in advance if you will have a planned absence from school, so
that I may plan accordingly and help you stay up to date with your work.

III. Materials for Differentiation

This course will use a wide range of resources to meet the needs of all learners. We
will incorporate the use of film excerpts, educational video segments, visual and
written primary source documents, and graphic organizers.

IV. Supplies
