A Case of Mistaken Identity: Julia Domna As Concordia On Ric 380 and 381
O stands out as one of the most famous and best studied in recent
years. Much attention has been devoted to the subject of her life
and many have attempted to assess her unusually prominent role within
theSeverandynasty.[1]Despitethedierencesinfocusorpurposefoundin
each of the many studies on the empress, there is a consensus that Julia
representsone of the most honoured consortsof the imperial period.Al-
thoughallusionstoherprominencecanbefoundintheancientliterature,
thelevelofprestigeaordedtoJuliacanbemoreeasilyobservedinthesheer
numberandvarietyofcoinsstruckinherhonour,fromtheearliestyearsof
herhusbandSeptimiusSeverusreign(ad193-211)throughtothedeathof
hereldestsonCaracallain217,nottomentionthecommemorativeissues
struckinherhonourduringthereignofAlexanderSeverus.[2]Amongthe
