8th Grade American History Course Outline 2016-2017
Dear TYWLS Families, This year we will be exploring how the issue of civil rights shaped the United States after the Civil War. This course will utilize a wide range of resources to meet the needs of all learners. We will incorporate the use of film excerpts, educational video segments, visual and written primary source documents, and graphic organizers. Each 8th grader will be required to complete a rigorous yearlong Exit Project that has four parts: Research, Historical Fiction, an artistic creative piece, and an oral presentation at the end of the school year. There will be one research paper assigned each month. Students will also be expected to post comments online via Edmodo. Edmodo is an academic website that students will be using as a tool for online academic discussion, assignments, questions regarding class work, and an online resource for extra help. Students can use Edmodo to contact me to further discuss class concepts and lessons. Specific codes for Edmodo will be given out in class. Extra help is also available every Tuesday from 2:20-2:55 pm. Homework will be given every other night. Late homework and projects will not be accepted, however there are opportunities for revision. If a student is absent, they have one day to complete the homework they have missed. Homework must be written in a daily planner. Included in this letter is a list of the topics we will be exploring, a list of major Exit Project assignments, academic expectations and the homework guidelines. Parents can contact me through Pupil Path or email at rrobinson@tywlsqueens.org. I am excited to work with your families this year to prepare our students for success. I look forward to guiding each student through the story of how our country was formed. Sincerely, Mrs. Robinson-Glenn 8th Grade Social Studies Teacher Units of Study Dates of (Major Assessments) Exit Project Assignments Prologue: How did geography affect the outcome of the September 28th Reconstruction Research Civil War and the distribution of civil rights?
