Science Lesson PLan

Objective
- Given examples from Bedhead the students will create 2 of their own similes, and 1
paragraph using their favorite simile.
Teks 5.8A
- Evaluate the impact of sensory details, imagery, and figurative language.
Materials
1.) BedHead Book
2.) Timer (On Phone)
3.) Tape
4.) Bubble Map/Simile Example Chart (30)
Anticipatory Setting
The students desk will be rearranged into desk of two so that everyone will have a partner in the activity
Instructional Input/Modeling
1.) You will start the lesson by asking the students what a simile is and for one of them to
give you an example. (1-2mins)
2.) You will then proceed to read the book Bedhead (8-10mins)
3.) After reading the book you will have the students look at their Examples/Bubble map and
jot down as many similes as possible within a certain time frame. (5mins)
4.) Once the students time has ended you will have them get tape and have them plaster
their similes on the wall for display. (1min)
5.) Have them walk around the room and see all the similes they have come up with. (5mins)
6.) Have them choose their favorite simile and then have them create a paragraph using their
simile. (5mins)
7.) Afterward have 3 come and read their paragraphs to the class. (5mins)
8.) Ask at least 2-3 questions to make sure the kids understand the concept of similes. (1-
2mins)
Checking for Understanding
After the activity you will ask the students questions regarding similes such as (ex. What were some
similarities you saw between the similes or What were some of your favorite similes from today's
activity.
Guided Practice
The instructions and examples given will act as the guided practice. As well as the similes created by the
students.
Independent Practice
We will have the students listen to story and have them create similes that they like and then use those
similes to show other students their similes so that those students can use those similes in their next
activity which will be making a paragraphs using their favorite similes. Then having 3 of those students
present to the rest of the class as prime examples.
Closure
We will ask for examples of anyone who has seen similes in literature that they have read. This is an open
ended question and we will accept a few volunteers who are willinging to share.
Time - Aiming for around that 30 minute mark.
