1819 - Sir Stamford Raffles of British East India Company built trading post on
Singapore island.

1826 - Singapore, Malacca and Penang became British colony of the Straits
Settlements.

1941 -

- Singapore was prospering from trade and exports.


- In World War II, the Japanese invaded and gained control of Malaya.
Malaya and Singapore and drove the British out.
- The people suffered and lived in fear during the Japanese power.

1945- In WWII Singapore falls to Japan and Japan defeated.

- Britain gained back control of Malaya and Singapore.


- The aftermath of the war rose up nationalism.

1946

- The Malayan Union was created to protect the economic privileges for the
British in Malaya, , prepared local Malays to form their own government
and became official.
- The union consisted of all the Malay states and strait settlements that were
all under control by the British.
- Singapore became separated colony.
1948

- The Malayan Communist Party (MCP) started uprising against the British
authorities.
- After members of the party murdered three European managers, the British
authorities were in panic.
- The MCP announced an armed rebellion against British authorities for the
immediate independence of Malaya.

1957 - The British government finally granted Malaya and Singapore


independence.

- The leader of the independence group, Tunku Abdul Rahman, became the
first prime minister of the Malayan region.

1959 - Singapore was now a self-governing country, with Lee Kuan Yew as the
new prime minister.

1963 - The Malayan prime minister, Tunku, proposed a merge between the
Federation of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, and Sabah.

- Tunku and Lee Kuan Yew both agreed that merging would provide defense,
security, better foreign affairs, among other benefits.

1965 - Singapore separated from Malaysia, and became its own independent
democratic nation, which is reduced to 13 states, at Malaysia's invitation, amid
political and ethnic tensions.

- The territory becomes an independent republic and joins the United Nations.
1967 - Singapore is one of the 4 founder members of Association of Southeast
Asian Nations (Asean).

1993 - Ong Teng Cheong becomes first directly-elected president of singapore.

1970 - Tun Abdul Razak takes office as the second Prime Minister of Malaysia,
succeeding Abdul Rahman.

1976 -Tun Hussein Onn appointed as the third Prime Minister of Malaysia, a day
after the passing of Abdul Razak.

1981 - Tun Hussein Onn stepped down and appointed Dato Seri Dr Mahathir
Mohamad to take over as Fourth Prime Minister.

1990 - Lee Kuan Yew became the prime minister for 31 years and continued to be
the senior minister. Goh Chok Tong becomes new prime minister.

2003 - Malaysias longest-serving Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir retires. He is


succeeded by his deputy Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Marina Bay Sands is one of two


winning proposals for
Singapore's first integrated
resorts which incorporates a
family-friendly Universal
Studios Theme Park (Universal
Studios Singapore). The two
large-scale resorts were
conceived to meet Singapore's
economic and tourism objectives for the next decade and will have 30-year casino
licenses. Bidders were assessed based on four criteria: tourism appeal and
contribution, architectural concept and design, development investment, and
strength of the consortium and partners. The resort is designed by Moshe Safdie. It
was initially inspired by card decks.

Fun facts about Singapore and Malaysia

- Singaporeans have the fastest walking speed. On average, we can walk about
6.15km in an hour.

- Singapore has the biggest Yakult bottles in Southeast Asia, and the most
expensive.

- The largest tropical orchid garden in the world is found in Singapore Botanic
Gardens.
-When you hear a group of Malaysians speaking, you may hear lah thrown around
a lot. Sometimes in almost every sentence.

Malaysia Coat of Arms

Adopted in 1965, the Malaysian coat of arms


consists of 2 tigers supporting a shield (which
serves as a representation of the Malaysian states),
a crescent and 14-point star at the top.

Singapore Lion Head Symbol

The lion head symbol was introduced in 1986 as an


alternative national symbol of Singapore. The lion head
was chosen as a logo, as it best captures the characteristics
of Singapore's reputation as a Lion City. It is used in less
formal occasions mainly to promote Singapore's national
identity.
