The cognitive approach to sound symbolism:
The etymological poetics in Amal Dunkul's experience

Mohie Eldine Muhasseb

Minia University. Egypt
muhassebe@hotmail.com

Abstract:
The relationship between the sound of a word and its meaning, or what we may
call (sound-meaning mappings), has long been proposed to be critically important for
language evolution, or for its epistemological status. This article tries to investigate the
cognitive dimensions and semantic features which are evoked by the perceived qualities
of the linguistic sounds in their concentrations at varying frequencies or modulations. In
Cognitive linguistics, sound symbolism is dealt with according to the perspective that
some phonological features are correlated dirictly with some semantic and cognitive
variables. Some of poetic texts of the Egyptian poet (Amal Dunqul), and some of his
critical writings, are put in the light of this investigation. In our discussion of what
we have called his (etymological poetics) we have mentioned to sound symbolism roots
inancient philosophy, and we haveexamined its significance and effects in the cognitive
reactions of some prominent literary figures in their approaches to Dunqul`s poetry.

Emission in Khalil Hawey 's Poetry
(A study of "Naher al-Rimad" and "Al-Nayee wa Al-Reeh")

Ehsan Sadiq Allawati

Sultan Qaboos University- Muscat- Sultanate of Oman
ehsansadiq@hotmail.com

Abstract:
This study attempts to focus closely on (Naher Al-Rimad) and the other (Al-Nayee
wa Al-Reeh) of the distinguished poet KHALIL Haweey (1919 or 1925 - 1982), by
throwing light objectively on the principles which his poetry became known of and he
became affiliated to.
Al-Haweey was known for his profound belief in the capabilities of the Arabs to rise
up from their long coma to concentrate on their vast commitments and responsibilities
notably in the scope of the Arab unity not only politically but in all areas.
This phenomenon and/or reality was considerably visible in two stages. Firstly, in his
pottery in which he beautifully illustrated his views on the pan-Arab unity. This trend
procured him a distinctive position in the modern Arabic pottery.
Secondly, his belief (in the pan-Arab unity) was not constant and stabilized and was
subject to a down turn at first instance. His position was quite stable and remained steadfast
in his first and second pottery but it took a round turn and stumbled at the beginning of his
third pottery (Bayader Al-Jooe) which he published soon after the collapse of the unity
between Egypt and Syria in 1961.
These two versions in the position of the poet made the study to focus upon the first
and second poems which were, nonetheless, beautifully and objectively versed.

Character Semiotics in the novel of butterfly kingdom

Mofareh Shabaan Asiri

King Khalid University. Saudi Arabia
frh99123@hotmail.com

Abstract:
This study discusses a characters semiotics in the novel of the butterfly kingdom by
the Algerian writer Waciny Laredj. I initiated my research with an introduction in which
I indicated the characters importance as it is a central element in the whole narration,
and as a fundamental pillar in the formation of the novel, as well. Then I discussed the
concept of alienation as an ensured theme which has directly influenced the characters
formation of a novel. Therefore, the notion of this study came from alienation. The study
included two sections: First, the structure of characters where I explained and the effect
of alienation on its composition.
The second topic, is about the languages impact on deeping the concept of alienation
among the characters of the novel. Then the study came to a set of important results
which are:
(1) The concept of alienation with its different elements has a strong presence in the
novels characters formation.
(2) The language of novel contributed to deepen the concept of alienation among its
characters which resulted in reaching the extreme case of fragmentation and
decomposition.

Silence in dialogue: Tayeb Saleh s Season of
Migration to the North.

Zouhaier Elguesmi
University of arts and humain sciences Sousse-Tunisia
zouhaierabouamine@gmail.com

Abstract:
The study of silence in the Taieb Salehs Season of migration the north aims at
unveiling another side of the novel that has long failed to fall under scrutiny inside
and outside language. We tried in the theoretical outset to highlight its connection with
verbal communication, to show it status in linguistics, and to demarcate its position in
literature.
Silence has huge expressive potentials for it accommodates what we dont know, what
we fail to perceive and what we are unable to express. In fact, silence voices what our
verbal language tries to destroy and unveils what speech tries to obscure.
At the practical level, we examined the textual distribution of silence at the level of
the narrative structure of the novel. We highlighted its patterns and the explicit indices in
speech interactions. We came to the conclusion that silence has a huge role in elucidating
general discourse , notably recital one ;it looks as though it were a process of conscious
and unconscious interlocution. It is considered as a form of verbal deviation in the
dialogues of the novel.Accordingly, it is its eloquent silence thats open to explanation
and interpretation. It has connotations, meanings and pragmatic , expressive and aesthetic
functions according to the aims of the interlocutors and their intentions.

Manouba University. Tunisia
ridhalibi@gmail.com
Abstract:
This study aims at digging deep in the poetry of Jarir to scrutinize the traces of
argumentative rhetoric in eulogizing and , notably, in lamenting.
The study is essentially meant to peruse the structural aspects of his poetry,
focusing on the styles , the structures and the themes he used .
In Jarirs verse , we came across a persona addressing others, complaining about its
penury in an attempt to stir the compassion of a flattered addressee , emotionally and
persuading him rationally to consider uncertain conditions .Hence, Jarir had recourse
to implicit argumentations at times and explicit ones at other times. Thus, from rhetoric,
Jarir made use of various devices to describe and portray.
Apart from that, Jarir selected the right stylistic devices to bolster his speech strategies
.In his magnificent verse, Jarir made an abundant use of the imperative and the conditional
modes. He did exploit them skillfully without affecting the overall format of his eulogy
poems and their corresponding meanings. Jarir switched from one part of his poems to
another ,and from one message to another ,preserving the harmony of the parts of his
poems that deal with eulogy.
We managed to touch the well knit fabric of Jarirs verse at the levels of structure
and meaning and his ability to compose poetry.

Keywords:
Implicit argumentation- explicit argumentation- influence- persuade- lament-
eloquence- stylistic devices.

The Convergence and incompatibility between the
Rhetoric and the Stylistics attributes
Tata benguermaz
Chlef, Algeria University
t.benguermaz@univhb-chlef.dz
Abstract:
One of the problems facing the researcher stylistic browse during stylistic studies is
problematic relationship between the stylistic and rhetoric, what unites them? And what
does not gather?, And what the nature of their relationship, I offer Abdulsalam Masdi set
of ironies between rhetoric and stylistic, all indicate rope does not break compatibility
between them.
The relation between the stylistics and the rhetoric is sometimes strong andsometimes
weak this imbalance is perceived through functional as well as teleological difference
the ststylistics and the rhetoric melt together and separate from each other in terms
of the historical ath of the stylistic.they cross in the analysis which is known as the
literary discours .besides the use of the analysis tools and descriptive scientific research
methodology in describing the characteristics borrows the rhetorical tools in order to
determine its stylistic attributes.thus , the stylistics analyses the literary discourse using
the rhetorical tools which are used in the stylistic analysis .
And that the most important points that characterize the all the stylistic rhetoric lurk in
rhetoric that is interested to produce the effect that the recipient receives by influencing
element, while considering the stylistic ways and mechanisms of influence by the analysis
of its causes and to highlight the aesthetics

Different death: The problematic Heir

Dr. Hassan Elmouden

Marrakech. Morocco
elmouden63@gmail.com

Abstract:
I assume that this question: who am I? is the central question in the novels of the
Moroccan writer Mohamed Berrada. But this issue is addressed in a different way: it's
more of this classic autobiographical form, nor this new autobiographical form called:
fiction... It is a form that can be called: novel of I, and that can be read as a novel and
autobiography at the same time, and dealing with emerging issues: can - we say of this
problematic heir who questioned his legacy, and the question of the transmission of this
legacy to his son, to the new generation...

Abstract:
My main aim in this study is to give an historical overview of the different
and organizations of grammar as proposed during the last four decades within the
theoretical framework of Functional Discourse Grammar and their empirical as well
as epistemological motivations.
A special attention will be paid to the two most recent models, namely "Functional
Discourse Grammar "(Hengeveld and Mackenzie 2008) and "Extended Functional
Discourse Grammar" (Moutaouakil 2011).

Critical insights into polysemy and its theories
(Rastier, Steffens, Reimer)

Saber Habacha
habacha@gmail.com

Abstract:
In recent years, criticalstudies related to polysemy have emerged. These studies
included a critical reviewof notions such as definition, concept and description. This
review also raised the question regarding the need for a theory of polysemy.
In this paper we seek to highlight some of the ideas put forward by Marie Steffens,
Nick Reimer and Franois Rastier among others who shaped a critical view of issues
related to polysemy in theory and practice.
Theoretical convictions have come to differ from practical procedures that induced
those critical readings. We aim, through this paper, to present attempts to redefine
polysemy (Marie Steffens), a reading about structural doubts putting into question
the very existence of polysemy (Franois Rastier) as well as a critical interpretation
of polysemys syntactical conception (Nick Reimer). Diverse as they are, all these
readings underscore the importance of critically considering all facets of polysemy.

Key words:
polysemy cognitive approach prototypical semantics modelization
lexicalabstraction homonymy

Rhetorical lexical movement until the end of the
fifth century: A semantic study
Djemaa Sabiha
Carthaj University. Tunisia
Sbiha. djemaa@gmail.com

Abstract:
Our work is situated within the intellectual activities of discourse and rhetoric.
In this work, we are trying to scrutinize rhetorical lexis in the traditional heritage,
in the light of recent literature on lexical sciences. We have realized that classical
scholars did not use to have a clear representation of rhetorical semantics. The study
of lexis used to be fuzzy and the concepts were different. Despite this fact, classical
scholars were able to produce important lexical and semantic work characterized by
the movement of lexis till the fifth century. Recent scholars have been using it as an
important reference in their encyclopedic works, especially with the advance of recent
linguistic vocabulary resulting from different linguistic theories that are related to
semantic studies and discourse analysis. They have rendered lexical research a well-
established science labeled Lexical science as it is a practical morphological study
of the term related to the concept.

The work consists of an introduction, main section of the article and conclusion.
The main reason for leading the author to do a research in this area is explained in the
introduction. The background knowledge of Ferras life, the method followed in the
works on the genre of Manil-Kurn in general, and the one that of Ferra are explored
in the introduction as well. The main section of the article focuses on Ferras approach

Cognitive Linguistics and the History of Linguistics

Abstract:
This study focuses on the past of Cognitive linguistics and its history in order to
make clear that some of the theoreticians that served as a negative reference point
for Cognitive Linguistics were actually closer to the cognitive approach than can be
derived from the discussions.
The study will not, however, try to give an exhaustive overview of all relevant
historical sources- actual ones or neglected ones. In particular, although the long past
of Cognitive Linguistics overlaps significantly with that of philosophy, psychology,
and the cognitive sciences, we it concentrate on the history of linguistics only, with
an occasional excursion to the history of philosophy. Section 2 of this chapter briefly
describes the internal history of Cognitive Linguistics. The following sections discuss
three topic areas of specific importance for Cognitive Linguistics: polysemy, metaphor,
and metonymy; the embodiment of cognition; and the Gestalt nature of linguistics.

Keywords:
Linguistics- Cognitive linguistics- philosophy- psychology- cognitive sciences-
polysemy, metaphor, and metonymy

Abstract:
The cognitive turn in the humanities is an aspect of a more general cognitive turn
taking place in the contemporary study of human beings. Because it interacts with
cognitive neuroscience, it can seem unfamiliar to students of the humanities, but in
fact it draws much of its content, many of its central research questions, and many of
its methods from traditions of the humanities as old as classical rhetoric. Its purpose
in combining old and new, the humanities and the sciences, poetics and cognitive
neurobiology is not to create an academic hybrid but instead to invent a practical,
sustainable, intelligible, intellectually coherent paradigm for answering basic and
recurring questions about the cognitive instruments of art, language, and literature.

Keywords:
The cognitive turn- cognitive neuroscience- Art- Language- Literature.

. ((( A basic mental operation like blending could
not entirely escape detection. Literary cri -
- ics, art historians, psychologists, rhetoricians,
linguists, and other scholars have here and
- there noticed and analyzed individual blends.
There are also theoretical discussions that lean
in the direction of recognizing blending as a
basic mental operation. The most extended is
Arthur Koestlers work The Act of Creation
.
(1964). which presents Carl Dunckers blend
The Buddhist Monk. Fauconnier and Tur -
er (1998) in turn use The Buddhist Monk as
their main heuristic example of blending. But
Koestler regards blending as exceptional and
has no theory of its structural and dynamic
operation. Except under charitable reading of
a few of his passages, he appears to mistake it
for composition of elements selected from the
contributing scenarios.
