St John Owasso Journal Club

A research study titled The Cockcroft Difference, an analysis of the impacts of leadership
development programs, suggest that nursing leadership programs with similar attributes to a
journal club positively impact continued research, education, and performance (Chappell &
Willis, 2012).

Purpose of SJO journal club: Familiarize SJO RNs with a research process that supports
evidence base practice.

SJO mentors seek to foster qualified, invested leadership. Mentors propose to establish a
journal club by identifying a like-minded group of St. John Owasso Registered Nurses, who are
interested in researching practice protocols and evidence based practices. The SJO journal club
reviews, critiques, and presents research articles relevant to their current practice.

Primary objectives
Learning the Evidence Based Practice process
Discuss peer reviewed studies that answer practice questions and practice gaps
Challenge and improve current nursing practice using Evidence Base Practice

Suggested outcomes of the journal club


Increased knowledge and confidence in individual practice.
Increased nursing judgement
Improved nursing leadership
Outcome evidenced by increased nursing confidence, and reduction of clinical error

St John Owasso Journal Club observes the following SJMC Journal Club Guidelines
_X__ Review SJMC Journal Club Guidelines
_X__ Establish qualified, invested leadership - a committed mentors & champions
_X__ Identify a like-minded small group of participants: St. John Owasso Registered Nurses
_X__ Identify the concept(s) to be discussed, including goals, purposes and format of the club
_X__ Communicate purpose of journal club to participants
_X__ Identify easily accessible location for all participants to meet, physical or online
_X__ Ensure computer access at designated location, negotiate a reasonable time for meeting
_X__ Identify the outcomes to be produced by the journal club and how to measure them
_X__ Submit a minimum of 6 current, peer reviewed, scholarly article per year
_X__ Communicate details about the journal club to others
