Geometry

Period 5

Geometry Final Reflection

This year in Ms. Hazlewoods Geometry class I learned many new ideas in mathematics that

interested me. During the first semester I learned how to better use devices such as protractors

and compasses, as well as equations and definitions of different lines, segments, points, angles,

and so many other shapes and ideas. We focused mainly upon perpendicular and parallel lines

and the different translations of triangles. We additionally studied proofs and the many theorems

for proving triangles congruent. Completing a proof correctly felt like reaching the top of Mount

Everest as they have not been easy for me, but with the help of my classmates and table partners

I have improved greatly. During the second semester we focused on trigonometry, using terms

such as sine, cosine, and tangent. That lesson has probably been one of my favorites as I finally

got to understand what those buttons on the calculator meant! I also did very well and was very

fortunate to understand the more challenging questions thanks to the assistance of my teachers

and peers. I enjoyed very much being surrounded by such a positive and helpful class. They were

all very outgoing and offered help whenever I needed it.

Geometry is used in the real world in many ways. It is used in architecture to create buildings,

furniture, and amusement park rides, as well as in art to create beautiful masterpieces. It is used it

computers to allow us access to the internet, and different algorithms and codes are used to

develop different video games that most children have played. It is also used in sciences, one of

the fields that I wish to pursue and establish a career in, and in engineering to build cars and
spaceships. Everything in the world can be defined with geometry, a language of many numbers,

postulates, and theorems proving the world as we see it.

As my final, I took part in an assignment where I would find and photograph real life examples

of what I have learned in this school year. I learned that every single lesson that we completed

could be applied to real life, and that everything around us is math. I also learned important

lessons of work ethic and time management, though I do believe that it would have been

beneficial if we had begun the project earlier, or even completed the sections as we learned them

in the book, and then put them in a full presentation at the end.

Geometry relates to the world in many ways. We can use its theorems to find volumes of

containers, or to prove the reflectional symmetry of a hat. It can be applied in more complex arts,

or just simply in everyday life. Everything I have learned in this class will be helpful in my

future, and it has made me more conscious of the world around me everyday. Everything has a

measurement and a purpose for the measurement. I enjoyed being on the hunt for these examples

all of the time, and I will continue to do so for a very long time.
