Most ketoximes when treated with a strong acid-catalyst undergo a rearrangment to form N-
substituted amides. This is known as Beckmann rearrangment. It involves migration of alkyl / aryl
group from carbon to nitrogen. The reaction is stereospcific and it is the group which is anti to the
OH group that migrates. The reaction proceds through the formation of a cationic intermediate as
shown below.
