Dear Max,
Have you ever wondered what happened to businessmen who went into debt in the
eighteenth century? Well, David Lisss book Conspiracy of Paper gives valuable insight to this
The book begins with the main protagonist, Benjamin Weaver coming from a wealthy
family who resides in South London; until the sudden and unexplained death of Benjamins
father. Tragically affected by the ambiguity of his fathers passing, young Benjamin begins to
conduct his own investigation as to what transpired. Entering archaic Old-English coffee houses
in search of his fathers closest rivals, Benjamin begins to navigate the cruel and indifferent
world of English stock jobbers and investors. As this historical and suspenseful novel
progresses, the youth, impulsiveness and inexperience begins to catch up with the main character
Despite the blanket of darkness that is about to encompass him, Benjamin remains
optimistic about the progressiveness and efficiency of the investigation that he has taken upon
since the beginning of the story. All seems as if the conclusion of the book will be a clean road
ahead, until the mistake that Benjamin made in the beginning of the novel catches up to him: hes
following in the exact footsteps of his deceased father. The smoking gun in this predicament is
that if he keeps going as he is inclined to do, his fathers fate will almost certainly become his

own. Can he avoid another mans fate and find out the details to his fathers unexplained death?
