Documentation for Roy Burton Older

(10 February 1886 to 13 April 1964)
father of Truxton James Older
(28 September 1911 to 06 April 2009)
Roy Burton Older was born 10 February 1886 the son of James Grant Older and
Wilhelmina Fredericka Lorenz.(1) Roy married Ethel Leona Worth were married in
1911 in Champaign County, Illinois.(2) Ethel Leona Worth was born in Terre Haute,
Vigo County, Indiana, on 08 January 1893.(3) She was the daughter of Chesterfield
Worth and Lucy Jane Harmison.(4)
Roy Burton and Ethel Leona (Worth) Older were the parents of three children.
Truxton James Older was born at 1165 North Edward Street in Decatur, Macon County,
Illinois, on 28 September 1911.(5) A daughter, Wilma Jane Older, born 10 May 1915 and
a son, Robert Burton Older, born 26 November 1922, were born in Danville, Illinois.(6)
Robert Burton Older landed at Normandy on the 25th hour of D-Day, or the 1st hour of
the second day, in the Allied Invasion of Europe in 1944.(6A) He was wounded at some
point before the end of the war.(6B) He helped liberate at least one German
concentration camp and served in Belgium.(6C) He was in The Battle of the Bulge.(6D)
Robert Burton Older died on 03 January 2013 at Grants Pass, Oregon.(6E) His body was
cremated and on Monday 20 May 2013 the remains were laid to rest at the Danville,
Illinois, National Cemetery. He received a military burial with a 21-gun salute.(6F)
Attending the service were Bradley Burton Older, a son of Robert; Ricky and Rhonda
Older, son and daughter of Brad; Lily Renee Schwaesdall, daughter of Rhonda Older;
and Curtis Lynn Older, nephew of Robert Burton Older. Based on a photo the 918 was
part of the Twelfth Air Force.
The 1930 Federal Census records indicate Roy was age 25 and Ethel was age 18 at
the time of their marriage.(7) No marriage record has been found. Roy worked himself
up from being a janitor to being over the entire Alith-Prouty Company in Danville,
Illinois, except for the owner of the business. Roy apparently worked at Alith Prouty his
entire working life, not ending his career there until age 76. I don't recall seeing Roy
without a cigar in his mouth. My dad, Truxton, told me Roy used to shave with a cigar
in his mouth. Cigars were all my dad and I ever got Roy for any celebration, such as his
birthday, Christmas, etc.
Roy Burton Older died on 13 April 1964 at Lake View Hospital in Danville,
Illinois, after having a hole develop in his esophagus about a month before. Both
Truxton and I believe the hole was due to cancer from smoking cigars. He was buried
near his parents at Springhill Cemetery on Voorhees Street in Danville, Illinois.(8) Ethel
Leona Worth Older, Roy's wife, died at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura,
Ventura County, California, on 26 December 1975 at age 82.(9)
Roy Older is listed with his parents, his two sisters, and his paternal
grandmother in the 1900 United States Census for Indiana, Vigo County, city of Terre
Haute, Harrison Township, Ward #8, house number 1658, dwelling number 51, and
family number 52. Roy, Ethel, Truxton and Wilma Jane Older are listed in Newell ED
#173, city of Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois, U. S. Federal Census in 1920. Roy,
Ethel, Truxton, Wilma Jane, and Robert B. Older appear in the 1930 Federal Census for
Ward 4, Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. Roy B. and Ethel L. (Worth) Older should
be listed in the 1940, 1950, and 1960 Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois, Federal
Census records.(10)

Your most important documentation is Truxton's birth certificate with the 1973
affidavit. It is an unusual document in that the original certificate gave the baby's
gender as "female" and the child was initially unnamed. Therefore, other
supportive documents are desirable to prove his parentage. Do you have the
1920 census for this family? I see that the 1930 census in enclosed, but what you
need is another supportive document listing young Truxton in the household of
his parents. I don't see the 1920 census scanned anywhere, although you refer to
it, and it is a pivotal document.

Am I misreading, or did Truxton appear both in the household of his aunt and
uncle and also in his parents' household in 1930?

Including causes of death can be very important to family history and I was glad
to see that you are mentioning causes of death, when known. This is information
your daughter and future grandchildren will need to have.

Since Truxton's marriage license does not include his parents' names. placing
him in the household of his parents in the 1020 census increases in importance.

MAVIS LORENE GOUTY

Unlike Truxton's rather odd birth certificate, Mavis' is an excellent document,

naming herself, as well as both parents. Her acceptance into the DAR shows that
her documentation is solid. Further proofs of the 1920 and 1930 censuses and
her death certification are more than enough proof of parentage for Mavis, even
though her marriage record does not give her parents' names. This was a very
easy file to evaluate! No further proofs needed for Mavis.

ROY BURTON OLDER

There are two important documents lacking in this generation: Roy's birth record
and his marriage record. Knowing what a careful researcher you are, I am certain
that you have looked long and hard for both these documents. Marriage records
have been kept in Macon County since 1829, so I wonder if by any change Roy
and Ethel could have been married somewhere else? Wilma's statement can only
be considered "hearsay," as she was not even born at the time of the marriage. It
would not serve as a proof. Have you check surrounding counties for a marriage
record? I have researched at the Macon Countv Courthouse and found their
records there were quite good.

Although statewide birth records were not required in Illinois until the 2oth
century, according to The Handvbook for Genealogists, there are some birth
records in Decatur as early as 1850. In the absence of a birth certificate, here is
another possibility. Decatur had excellent early newspapers. I have read some of

them on microfilm for my ov.'ll family. It is possible that there might be a birth
announcement in a Decatur paper, since you have a birth date. You could check
the newspapers for about a two week period following Roy's birth to see if there is
anything mentioned.

Lacking those t\-vo documents, you have Roy's death certificate listing his parents'
names, as well as his birth date. Death certificates are the least desirable form of
proof for a person's birth and parentage, as the information is only as good as the
grieving relative who provides the information. You refer to the 1900 and 1910
census for Roy and his parents, but I don't see them in the packet. IfTruxton is
listed as "son" in his parent's household, that is very good proof, coupled \>\rith the
death certificate.

The lack of a marriage record could be problematic with any of the lineage
societies. Therefore, if no marriage rec01:d can be located, some other documents
could be substituted. A deed of property that names Roy Older "and wife Ethel,"
for example, would be a good proof of marriage, since it would show some
particular county recognized them as a legally married couple. Again, knowing
the date of marriage and the presumed location, you could read Decatur
newspapers on microftlm to see if there is a marriage mention. Ancestry. com has
a number of Decatur newspapers in one of their subscription databases. You
would have to buy a subscription to them and they are ponderous to search, but it
might be an alternative to ordering microfilm.

Suggestions for this generation would be to include the 1900 and 1910 censu.e
for Rov and his parents. Continue to search for a birth record and a marriage
license.

ETHEL LEONA WORTH

Ethel has some nice proofs, but one or two more that name her father would be
nice. The 1900 census refers to her as "Ethel Worth" in the household of her
stepfather and mother. Her social security application lists her father's name and
her maiden name. Her death certificate names her father. Lacking a census
report for Ethel in the household of her father, which is impossible since he died
before 1900, locating a marriage record for Roy and Ethel would be a good
additional proof, since it might name her father. Ethel's mother Lucy's second
marriage certificate is also important, as it would presumably establish her as the
widow Worth. I have not seen this document, since l don't have a file on Lucy
yet, but you do refer to it. The Terre Haute city directory naming Et hel's mother
as the widow of Chesterfield Worth is doubly important here. Establishing Lucy
as Chesterfield's '~idow, showing her remarried in the census with Ethel
surnamed "Worth"

According to The Handybook for Genealogists, Indiana counties kept their own
birth records beginning about 1882. Have you checked the Vigo County Health

SHORTREPORTFORCURTOLDER

THREE FILES: TRUXTON JAMES OLDER; ROY BURTON OLDER;

ETHEL LEONA WORTH (part of CD#3)

July 25, 2004

Curtis L. Older

Gastonia, NC 28054-6066

Dear Curt,

Per your letter of 11 July 2004 (which I found on the CD after mailing your last
report), I have reviewed the flies for Truxton Older, Roy Burton Older and Ethel
Leona Worth, taking into consideration the issues raised the first time around.

TRUXTONJAMESOLDER

With the inclusion of the 1920 census records, I find no remaining issues with
this file. As mentioned in my last report, it would be a good idea to include more
complete citation for your censuses in footnotes, i.e., page number, household
number, etc.

ROY BURTON OLDER

One of the important proofs for Roy Burton Older, since here is no birth record,
would be an additional document placing him in his parents' household. Your
footnotes for Roy mention the 1900 and 1910 censuses, but I could not tell if you
had actually located these records. It was essential to find a document that listed
712512004 - Files Analysis for Curtis Older - by Sandra Lake Lassen

Roy as son of James and Minnie Older. I accessed Heritage Quest's censuses and
found the James and Minnie Older family in the 1900 census in Vigo Co., IN, 8th
Ward, Terre Haute, ED 119, page 14B, at 1658 Liberty Avenue. James G. Older
and Minnie Older have son Roy, age 14, in their household and he is plainly listed
as son. In 1910, the Older family is in lllinois, Macon Co., Decatur, 6th Ward.
James' middle initial is wrong in the index, where he is listed as "James J . Older."
James, Minnie, Nellie and Mabel are in the household, but Roy was not. I did not
see Roy in the 1910 index anywhere. However, Roy is now established as the son
of his parents. No further issues.

Finding Roy's marriage record would be a very nice genealogical coup!

ETHEL LEONA WORTH

The inclusion of the 1900 census showing Ethel Worth in the household of her
mother and stepfather, where she is clearly listed as "stepdaughter," and the
Terre Haute City Directory listing Ethel's mother as "widow of Chesterfield
Worth" establish Lucy as a widow and then show her remarried in the census.
Her children by Chesterfield were clearly surnamed "Worth" in their stepfather's
household.

It would be a good idea to continue to search for Lucy's marriage record to Jesse
Lewellen. Ethel is established as the daughter of her father Chesterfield by
naming him in her Social Security application; he is also listed as her father on
her death certificate.

I have no issues with this file. However. for her mother Lucy, do keep looking for
a second marriage record.

I will be working on the next CD this coming week. You have prepaid and don't
owe me any money for this search or for the next one (i.e., the rest of CD #3).

Sincerely,
