Robert William Gouty was born August 26, 1889, in Gessie, Vermilion County,
Indiana.(1) He was the son of Joseph P. Gouty and Luella Marie Hartman.(2) On
February 3, 1917, Robert William Gouty married Ethel Belle Fox.(3)
Robert and Ethel Gouty lived on a 40-acre farm in Mound Township, Warren
County, Indiana, that Robert received from his father, Joseph P. Gouty. Robert and
Ethel were the parents of one child. Mavis Lorene Gouty was born one mile northeast of
Gessie on the Daniel Alexander Fox farm in Highland Township, Vermillion County,
Indiana, on a Thursday, April 11, 1918, at 10 AM.(4)
Mavis Lorene Gouty graduated from Covington (Indiana) High School about
1936. She married Truxton James Older on September 1, 1938, in Danville, Vermilion
County, Illinois.(5) Truxton was the son of Roy Burton Older and Ethel Leona (Worth)
Older.(6)
Robert William Gouty died on June 4, 1949, at age 59 from spinal meningitis at
Lake View Hospital in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(7) Upon the death of
Robert, Ethel and Mavis each received one-half of the 40-acre farm in Mound Township,
Warren County, Indiana, where Mavis grew up.(8) Lawrence Vickery, a farmer who
lived nearby, farmed the 40-acre tract on a 50-50 basis after Robert's death.
Ethel Belle (Fox) Gouty died at Lake View Hospital in Danville, Illinois, on
January 25, 1971, at age 78 after spending approximately 6 years in a nursing home due
to a stroke she suffered about 1964 that paralyzed one-half of her body.(9) Both Robert
and Ethel Gouty are buried in the Lower Mound Cemetery west of Covington, Indiana.
The 1900 U. S. Census for Indiana, Warren County, Mound Township, lists the
Joseph Gouty household. Joseph Gouty is listed as 40 years old in 1900, born in January
1861 in Indiana, father born in Ohio, mother born in Indiana, race is white, and gender
is male; Mary L. Gouty is listed as born in July 1863 in Illinois, father born in Indiana
and mother born in Indiana; children listed are Rose A, Ezra E., Robert W., Roy L., Inez
F., and Ida M. Robert is listed as age 10, born in August 1889. (10)
The 1910 U. S. Census for Indiana, Warren County, Mound Township, lists the
Joseph Gouty household. Joseph Gouty is listed as 50 years old in 1910, born in Indiana,
race is white, gender is male; Mary Gouty is listed as age 46; Robert Gouty, son, is listed
as age 20, single, born in Indiana, father born in Indiana, mother born in Indiana.(11)
Robert, Ethel, and Mavis Gouty appear in the Indiana Federal Census in 1920 for
Warren County, Mound Township. Robert is listed as age 30, Ethel as age 27, and Mavis
as age 1. Robert, Ethel, and Mavis are listed as born in Indiana. All of their parents are
listed as born in Indiana.(12) Robert, Ethel, and Mavis Gouty appear in the Mound
Township, Warren County, Indiana, Federal Census in 1930. Robert is listed as age 40,

Dies at Lake View,
Rites Held On Monday
Funeral services for Robert William Gouty, age 59, well known farmer of the State Line
neighborhood who died last Saturday morning, were held at 3 o'clock Monday
afternoon at the Benson Chapel.
Mr. Gouty died at 7:30 a.m. at Lake View Hospital, Danville, Ill., where he had been a
patient for the past three weeks. Death was attributed to meningitis. He had been in ill
health for some time following and attack of the flu.
He was born August 26, 1889 near Gessie, Ind., the son of Joseph and Luella Hartman
Gouty. He was married February 3, 1917 to Ethel Fox, who survives.
Mr. Gouty was a member of the Fountain Lodge 274, F. & A. M., of Covington and was
well known in this community, having lived near here all his life.
Surviving beside the widow are: a daughter, Mrs. Marvin Lorene Older, Danville, Ill.,
one grandson, Curtis Lynn; two brothers, Ezra of State Line Route, and Leslie, of
Covington, and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Remster, Villard, Minn., Mrs. Ida Saltsgaver,
Danville, Ill., and Miss Inez Gouty of Indianapolis.
Dr. A. F. Bremicker, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Danville, Ill., and the Rev. J.
W. Knight of Perrysville officiated. The pallbearers were: Earl Strawser, Russell Patton,
Archie Fields, Jerd Crouch, Regan Mallett and Lawrence Vickery. Musical selections
were by Clifford Martin. Burial, with Bodine & Shelby in charge, was in the Lower
Mound Cemetery.

Mrs. Ethel B. Gouty


Mrs. Ethel B. Gouty, 78, of 1705 E. Main, died at 4:50 a.m. Monday (Jan 25, 1971) at Lake
View Memorial Hospital. She had been ill three and a half years.
Born Oct. 6, 1892 near Gessie, Ind., she was the daughter of Daniel A. and Elizabeth
Ricketts Fox. She was married on Feb. 3, 1917 to Robert W. Gouty, who died June 4,
1949.
Former resident of Warren County, Ind., she had resided on E. Main for 16 years. She
was a member of the Howard Chapel Church and attended the First Presbyterian
Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Truxton J. Older of Danville; a sister, Mrs.
Ruby Hines of Covington, Ind.; two brothers, William E. Fox of Covington, Ind. Route 2
and Kennie B. Fox of Richmond, Ind.; and a grandson, Curtis J. Older, with the Navy. A
brother preceded her in death. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. EST Wednesday at the
Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home in Covington, with the Rev. Oliver C. Starn
officiating. Burial will be in Lower Mound Cemetery in Covington. Friends will be
received at the funeral home from 2-4:30 and 7-9 p.m. EST Tuesday.
