24. Documentation for Elias B.

Gouty
(11 September 1833 to 18 April 1915)
father of Joseph P. Gouty
(06 January 1860 to 15 October 1939)
Elias B. Gouty was born September 11, 1833, in Indiana.(1) He was a son of
Thomas Gouty and his first wife, Nancy Carr (or Keer or Kerr).(2) Thomas Gouty was
an early settler of Vermillion County, Indiana.(3) Thomas married Nancy Carr on
October 14, 1830.(4) The first child of Thomas and Nancy Gouty was Clarissa Gouty
who was born about 1832. Elias B. Gouty was the second child of Thomas and Nancy
Gouty.
Nancy Gouty, first wife of Thomas, apparently died sometime before May 31,
1840, when Thomas Gouty married his second wife, Elizabeth Stutler.(5) The third wife
of Thomas Gouty was Catherine Hoobler whom he married on June 28, 1849.(6)
Elias B. Gouty married Elizabeth Shute on September 1, 1853, in Indiana.(7)
Elizabeth Shute was the daughter of Richard Shute and Hannah McCartney who were
married September 1, 1814, in Ohio.(8)
The Peoples Guide for Vermillion County, Indiana, 1874 lists Elias Gouty as a
farmer born in Vermillion County in 1833 and located 1 mile northeast of Gessie. The
last name was misspelled as Grouty in the listing.(9) Elias and Elizabeth Gouty were the
parents of eight children: Thomas, William, Daniel, Russell, Lewis, Joseph P., Elizabeth,
and Elias Gouty Junior.
Elizabeth (Shute) Gouty died March 30, 1915, and was buried at the Hicks
Cemetery at Perrysville, Indiana.(10) Elias B. Gouty died April 18, 1915, age 81, and was
buried in the Hicks Cemetery at Perrysville, Indiana, with his wife.(11) Buried with
Elias and Elizabeth Gouty at the Hicks Cemetery is a son, Russell Gouty, who was born
November 17, 1857, and died September 27, 1858.(12)
Elias Gouty appears in a number of U. S. Census records for Vermillion County,
Indiana. The 1850 Federal Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township,
page 63, lists the Thomas Gouty household. Thomas Gouty is listed as age 44, male,
farmer, born in Maryland, real estate value owned = $3,000. Catherine Gouty is listed
age 25, female, wife, born in Ohio. Elias is listed as age 17, male, born in Indiana, and
attended school in year.(13) It is obvious from this census record that Catherine Gouty
was too young to be the mother of Elias B. Gouty.
The Elias Gowty (i.e., Gouty) household appears in the 1860 U. S. Census for
Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, Post Office Perrysville, page 67, line
40A. Elias Gouty is listed as age 26, white, farmer, born in Indiana, real property value =
$2,565, personal property = $1,000, head of household, and literate. Also listed are
Eliabeth Gouty, age 24, Thomas Gouty, age 5, William Gouty, age 4, and Joseph Gouty,
age 5 months.(14)
The Elias B Gouty household appears in the 1870 U. S. Census for Indiana,
Vermillion County, Highland Township, Post Office Perrysville. Elias' age at that time
is given as 36.(15) The 1880 Federal Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland
Township, enumerated the 7th day of June 1880 lists Elias Gouty as a farmer, age 48.
Elizabeth is listed as a wife, age 45. Elizabeth's father was listed as born in England and
her mother was listed as born in Maryland.(16)
The 1900 Federal Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township,
enumerated 19th June 1900 by Earl Carpenter, lists three members of the Elias B. Goudy
household. 1)Elias B. Goudy, head, white, male, born September 1833, age 66, married
46 years, born in Indiana, father born in Ohio, mother born in Ohio, farmer, did not
attend school in year, can read, write, and speak English; 2)Elizabeth Goudy, wife,
white, female, born December 1835, age 64, married 46 years, mother of 8 children, 7
children presently living, born in Indiana, father born in England, mother born in Ohio,
can read, write, and speak English; and 3)Elias Goudy, Jr., son, white, male, born March
1878, age 22, single, born in Indiana, father born in Indiana, mother born in Indiana.(17)

REPORT FOR CURT OLDER

Elias B. Gouty is well proven as the son of Thomas Gouty and Nancy Carr.

ELIAS B. GOUTY (#24), FATHER OF JOSEPH P. GOUTY

Paragraph one and footnotes one and two: Good tombstone photo with dates. We
have already determined Elias parentage from his father Thomas file above.

There is no footnote for the birth of Clarissa Gouty (first paragraph).

Your references are not spaced as you usually space them and are therefore hard to
read.

Good documentation for Elias marriage to Elizabeth Shute. Joseph is listed in both the
1860 and 1870 censuses in the household of his parents. Good proof of parentage.

There seems to be no Civil War record for Elias. Was he a Quaker? I wonder how he
managed to stay out of the war.

Curt, I tried to find Elias census report in the 1910 census, but could not find him. I saw
Elias Jr.s report. Can you tell me what page or image number Elias Srs report is on?
Id like to take a look at it. You are correct its very hard to read.

CONCLUSIONS: Elias is well documented as the son of Thomas and Nancy Gouty.
Joseph Gouty is well documented as the son of Elias and Elizabeth Gouty.
